I’ve read all the thoughts on infrared saunas in the archives here, read general reviews and studied. Low emf is a must, it seems, wooden seems best.

Cost is important, obviously. Do any of you have one and what do you think? So much conflicting information out there. Would a portable be as effective? It is cedar, hardwood better?

Have been considering this for a while. Tired of considering but want to make sure I purchase a truly beneficial, useful, fair priced IR sauna. Thanks.

Small, low emf, but the instructions weren’t for this model, so we had to contact them for instructions on how to build it together.

I would not buy a cheap portable sauna.

I have always heard Sunlighten was a top choice. That’s the one a lot of practitioners and spas have in their offices.

You might could find a used one for less. I would ask questions to find out if it had been in a moldy environment or used by a moldy person. Because it’s wood, it could have mold or mycotoxins from moldy people using it. I have read that moldy people can become sickened by their own detoxing and their bedding as mycotoxins come out of their pores. They are advised to use bedding they can dispose of once they can’t get it clean anymore. As a mold-sick person, I can definitely see that happening.

Deep Sleep - My thoughts are same with not buying portable, though some people have mentioned success with one. I’d prefer hardwood but not sure of cost. Did you put yours together?

WBF - Your points are why I’d rather not risk buying used. Might save money but would have no real idea what the sauna has “inside.”

Having to decide what to do just adds some mild stress, so I want to figure it out and go with decision.

Yes we did that with some help. We went to a store and looked at multiple saunas before deciding for that one.

Not sure how handy you are, but I know there are people here who have built their own. Aerose did. Waaayyy cheaper, but of course it’s more makeshift. Bulbs mounted on boards and a curtain or drape of some sort. A professional sauna would be far more pleasant aesthetically, if you have the $$$$ and a place to put it.

Deep Sleep - That is a good idea about going to look at some. The only ones I have ever seen were at the Biologix Center, and, of course, they were very high end. There are some stores around Atlanta I can go look.

WBF - Funny you should wonder how handy I am. It just took me 45 minutes to put up blinds that should have taken 10 smile. I am much better with outdoor work than building things. I'm still digging out of a hole trying to get to Heaven because of the times I've let loose building things. As far as $$$$$, that is the concern. Wayfair has some decent priced,

Dude - Thanks. I thought about it, and my son inherited building ability I did not. Not that I am helpless as in college I would frame and worked construction some summers. But tiny details wear my butt out, unless it's on my job doing sound.

again depends how handy you are or what you prefer - but i built my own based on the $3000 usd one here endorsed by Chris Kresser - who usually does his research - and i was more convinced by the near infra red literature than the far infra red stuff

i used 5 bulbs in place of 4 because i felt the original design lacked coverage of the lower legs
i used an untreated wood frame - and untreated canvas cover
i fitted switches so you could have 2-3-4 or all 5 bulbs light - for adjustability
it worked very well - though not as pretty as the original
total cost around $200usd

by the way with incandescent bulbs you need not be concerned with EMC issues - they are simply not significant emitters - its more marketing spiel that manufacturers use to try to scare people - i hate that.
i fitted a wire mesh connected to ground over the bulbs in any case - mainly to stop anyone accidentally touching them (they get hot!) - as it took only another 20mins

It's interesting that the big wooden sauna linked here only gets to the same temp my portable sauna does. I'm sure the wood ones are easier to keep clean, but they are also nearly 20x more expensive. The bigger ones are likely more comfortable. You have to cram yourself into the portable ones to get the full heat effect.

I would say it's really up to you and what is important to you. Personally, I've found saunas to be a nice detox option, but there are more important things to spend big money on. It hasn't magically made me well. On the other hand, it is one of my go-tos when I'm really flaring. But even the sauna is only temporary relief when I'm feeling really bad. In addition, I would say my gym's regular (non-IR) sauna was more effective than my portable IR sauna. I'm not sure how hot the gym sauna gets but it was hotter than the 140 degrees my portable maxes out on.

I agree. For me personally it would make more sense to do either what Garzie did for $200 or buy an affordable portable sauna. Given that I don't have the energy or skills to do what Garzie did (which is really impressive), I am going to go with a portable sauna myself.

Our sauna is one of the best things we ever have bought, and being comfortable really helps us to keep using it 2-3 days a week after a few years. I want to be able to dry my sweat with a towel and do DNRS in it easily.

thank you for the kind words.

it was a bit of a project to make at the time - as my energy levels were v low a couple of years ago when i made it.

i still have it - but after my fiancé had the crisis she is going through - i had to move out of our bedroom into what had been the spare/ storage room - and the sauna had to be taken down to make room. it is flat packed in the loft at the moment.

i gave it a pretty religious trial 3x a week for 4-5weeks - and while i found it enjoyable - and it probably did me some good - i was still suffering pretty heavy symptoms from what i know know is an active bartonella infection - and as such there is only so much a supportive therapy can do in such circumstances.

i look forward to setting it up again when i am in my own place though - especially through the winter months

Good point. You’re more likely to use and benefit from something you find comfortable and stress free. If you’re uncomfortable and tensed up in a sauna, you might not get the physical benefits from it that you should be getting.

It doesn't surprise me Garzie built his own. His technical thought process lends itself well to thinking outside the box and building, when needed. I would assume it also takes a lot of patience, which is where I struggle when it comes to building anything.

For me, as much as I would like to, building one is probably not going to happen after looking at all the very informative links provided by Dude and after seeing Garzie's, which is impressive that he did that.

Rainy Cloud kind of sums up about cost, and Lymie 24 makes a good point with " but there are more important things to spend big money on" when deciding on portable or higher end sauna.
