its tempting to draw those conclusions - but some of the other variant that have had increased mortality also replicated less than original variants in the lung tissue - so its not as clear cut as it seems.
i think the idea that omicron is less severe than other variants came originally from the early data from south africa - but the population it was in there was highly skewed towards young people - and so it was no surprise that the severity was on average lower in that population - and it does not tell us that it will be less severe in more general populations.
i hope this does prove to be the case - and omicron is less virulent - just think its too early to tell
