LW, do you have more difficulty digesting protein? Protein requires more calories to metabolize even in the healthy person. I believe I struggle with certain protein which would make a keto diet tough for me. I have what conventional medicine calls an AI thyroid condition so my cellular energy is affected. So many are helped by a high protein diet but I don’t think I can benefit right now.
Salad with low histamine veggies while unsatisfying seems gentler on me.
Thanks in advance for your experience or thoughts
MargaritaLyme - actually its a common misconception that a ketogenic diet is a high protein diet
it is not actually supposed to be high protein - but instead high fat - moderate protein
we need the same amount of protein whether we are on Keto or more conventional diets
so that is not the main change
the main change is dramatically reducing carbohydrates - and instead getting the vast majority of your energy from fats - with much the same protein intake as before.
i also have an auto-immune thyroid condition
its well known to reduce ones ability to make stomach acid
we need stomach acid to digest proteins so this could be what you are experiencing
thyroid hormones are critical to recovery - but conventional medicine doctors ( endocrinologists are generally some of the worst ones ) tend to believe they just need to give you a standard dose of Synthroid and measure TSH and that's that done. this is a long way from the case.
proper thyroid correction with combined T3 and T4 supplemental hormones can make big difference to many peoples health and functionality.
several leading :LLMD's also believe its critical for recovery from Lyme
in the meantime you may find a Betaine HCL supplement helpful ( replaces stomach acid )
i am able to eat Keto with no problems
