Coffee used to make me edgy ..now it does nothing...

My adrenals might have cooled off lately (good). But now my AM coffee does almost nothing. This is weird.

Same coffee, low acid instant, nothing fancy, only 8oz once a day when I do have it.

Im not a morning person so sometimes I need some AM coffee (as bad as it is for you). Im not naturally fully awake/ thinking well till noon. Thats not how the world works lol.

With Hashimoto and touchy adrenals, balanced energy has always been a challenge. I joke that I have two speeds: granny gear and wide open.

At least its better than when lyme was raging. I had to drink redbull many times to do anything back then, used it minimally, not the whole can at once! I still like it, but stay away from it usually.

Its the liquid Taurine in it that cant be duplicated by suppliments. It has less caffine than same oz as coffee , and the sugar free has the same positive "smooth / calm energy" effects on me.

Me rambling here again.

Nice catch astroman, I've come to learn this as well. There's something about it that's different. Maybe the synergy between ingredients. Or maybe liquid taurine is absorbed better or processed in a different way.

I should add that I recently quit caffeine, it was making me too tense.

One thing I'll say is I was reading up somewhere and it said if you don't have enough magnesium or l- theanine then coffee can make you jumpy , shaky and anxious so maybe you have enough of mag and the amino acids? Or maybe we've been sick so long our bodies are so accustomed to it we don't realize the difference? Bodies are probably just out of whack who really knows

When your adrenals are "off" your body can get very overly sensitive to caffeine. Caffeine becomes "super caffeine" then, and a little can go a long way. Most lymies have messed up adrenals from the stress on their body.

The common term "tired but wired" is referring to adrenal issues.

What my post was getting to was ; The above was me for years.....and now thats changed.

Normal (non-lyme) people who drink coffee can drink a lot of it, and sometimes they need several cups to "wake up", because they do NOT have adrenal issues. Thats possibly me now, or close to it. But, Ive not tried several cups because it would be hard on my stomach.

coffee is one of my small pleasures

i have 2 small cups after breakfast as a means of getting my aching sluggish body moving - but i also really enjoy the taste and texture

espresso style coffee - or a tall espresso / lungo style drink - black - 7g of freshly ground arabica coffee per shot
i think there is around 70-80mg of caffeine in it - doesn't seem to do me any harm

i avoid it in the afternoon - as i defo starts to affect my sleep if i drink it past around 3pm

other than that it seems fine.

i hear mixed things about it
i think there are some large scale studies showing that in moderation 2-4cups a day it actually reduces all cause mortality in humans
and it is known to have quite large number of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory chemicals in it - which is presumably why it helps all cause mortality ( inflammatory chronic conditions being the biggest killers in the developed world )

on the other hand there is am official limit for pregnant women acc to many health systems - so too much defo cannot be good for you - and i read something about the small particulate matter in espresso and cafetierre style coffee having some inflammatory effects.

my ex got well while drinking 4+ cups a day

i think i will be continuing to partake for the foreseeable future

I used to enjoy coffee and ice lattes often . I cut coffee out of my diet for about 1 yr, tried 1 sip of coffee and my heart rate went through the roof from 1 sip of coffee lol! I just don't care for coffee anymore since I know it would just make my adrenals crash even more. Lemon water was my substitute instead of coffee I guess

Garzie- Up to 4 cups a day, wow even the low acid stuff my stomach would not tolerate. I would imagine that much Caffeine probably would wake me up!

she had worse gut issues than me when we were both v ill - at her worst after almost any meal her belly would swell within 30mins to the size of someone heavily pregnant - then all the mood stuff would emerge - and life was v difficult.

after around 12 months of strict Keto she started to introduce more foods - went back to work an started drinking more coffee -

i don't think her digestion was fully back to normal - but seemed to be able to tolerate most things in moderation

I started drinking coffee the same year I got sick and had to cut it out completely when I got sick and many years after that. Now I have 3-4 small cups a day, but I recently learned that you should delay it 90-120 min after wakening, but it's something I struggle a bit with.

But for waking up I think my routine of a cold shower, 7 min of yoga, and getting some sunshine does the trick. I like the taste of coffee and the break to go to the coffee machine when working.

I replaced my coffee with green tea before, and I think it’s a good substitute as it's so much less caffeine and has good health benefits.

i think the research on coffee 1st thing seems to point mainly to not to take it before food rather than a set time after getting up - at least the stuff i read - but after eating is OK - that's what i do

i did give it up completely also for several months when i was at my sickest - and tried switching to green tea
which i quite liked and after finding a supplier of good stuff would drink quite a lot of - but then i developed a reaction to it - basically lots of tummy gurgling and feeing a bit off - which is a known sensitisation reaction some people get with it.

I don’t agree. Coffee early seems to lead to an afternoon crash and affects cortisol.

yeah - but that article is assuming a normal healthy person with a normal cortisol response

"If you’re caffeinating while your cortisol levels are still elevated (i.e., when you first wake up) you’re introducing caffeine into your system when you could do without it, and it can disrupt your cortisol’s natural flow. But if you wait an hour or two for your coffee, the caffeine will kick in as your cortisol levels begin to decline, just when you could use it the most."

for someone like me who after years of chronic illness - including disturbed cortisol rhythm - struggles to get any significant cortisol going until much later in the day it may actually be helpful to kick start the system earlier in the day and get me closer to the norm/ideal. at least that's the perspective i am working with.

i have been put off trying actual cortisol or synthetic cortico-steroids - due to people reporting it basically ruining their lives - and until i can make my body exercise early in the day - coffee is about the best thing i have found to get the system going and counter the offset day syndrome.

each to their own though - if your routine works better for you - I'm not suggesting you change it
just that the actual scientific papers i read on the adverse impacts of caffeine timing were mainly around not taking it in the am before food - where the cortisol spike interacted with things like blood sugar, i think, in a not so good way.

Ok, yeah that seems reasonable. I still have coffee after about 30 min a few days a week as I like to have it with breakfast. But I think it would be better for me to delay it more often, and something I might experiment more with later.

Three of my workouts per week are also early in the morning about 40 min after waking up. Or two, depending if I count yin yoga as exercise, where I take creatine before going to the gym.
