I am posting this on the Lyme forum as well as here, hoping to find someone who has connected an allergic reaction to pesticide/fungicide/herbicide applications by the landscape company servicing their property. I have been searching online but the studies showing reactions are based on agricultural spraying. Mine began after my first bulls-eye rash/tick bite in 2005. I moved to a community in 2007 that had lawn care and had the first incident. I suspected but could not be sure because here in NC they are not required to notify communities when spraying. Later I moved to a property that did not have lawn care and I had no problems until 2020 when I again moved to a community with lawn care. On several occasions I began sneezing during the night which continued for about
a day and included cough, nose running continuously, dizziness, ect. I met a neighbor who said she had asthma so I asked her if she avoided herbicide/pesticide spraying by the landscapers, but she didn't know when they sprayed or what.
I had a severe attack last spring and the next day found a termite exterminators notice on my porch informing me that he had sprayed. Then 2 weeks ago I heard what I thought was a riding mower and thought it was strange because it was Tuesday and the lawns are mowed on Mondays. I only heard it go by one time although they spend a few hours in the neighborhood on mowing days. Later that evening I began sneezing, eyes watering, breathing difficulty, etc and got online and discovered that many companies use a lawnmower-like vehicle to spread pesticides. This time my reaction lasted 4 days. If I had been thinking clearly I would have gone to Urgent Care, but my reactions in the past had never lasted beyond one day and I kept thinking it would be over in a few hours.
I have now read extensively about
these reactions and they are verified by studies of individual pesticides/herbicides, and it is reported that some accumulate in the body and the reactions get worse over time and can result in convulsions and loss of consciousness (I think/hope this is about
agricultural spraying only), but cannot find anything definitive about
reactions to residential applications. I know that there must be others who are reacting to regular lawn care spraying and wonder if maybe they have not connected their symptoms to the spraying since no one knows when it is going on. I have questioned people at two different communities and none of them has any idea when their properties are sprayed and do not even know the name of the landscape company that services the property. The HOA hires the landscape company and when I contacted the HOA of one of the properties they told me that they do not give out that information because they do not want homeowners bothering the landscapers!
Please comment if you have had an asthma like reaction to residential spraying in your community or suspect it could be related. Here in NC there are 2 major applications of hebicides that have caused symptoms, one in fall and another in the spring. Children, pets and the elderly are most sensitive. I would like to know how to convince the HOA that I need to know when my property will be sprayed so I can at least turn off the HVAC and leave for a few days. I just find it hard to believe that I am the only person with severe reactions to lawn care chemicals. I do not have any food allergies or allergies to anything on my skin. The only rash I have ever had are the two erythema migrans rashes that resulted from 2 tick bites. (I was not treated for either because an RN told me that they were spider bites. In 2018 a Lyme test was positive when I was being tested for molds and was able to go back through my thousands of photos and find the ones I took of the second rash in 2017)
