I have never understood the justification for not taking a study seriously solely because people aren't rats. That entirely invalidates the purpose of animal testing in the first place. Seeing that this study is not a first of its kind, it should be given importance.
for clarification - i think there is a misunderstanding here
interpretation of medical trials is a complex and nuanced business
no one is suggesting that animal trials that show adverse effects are disregarded
simply that we cannot safely assume an effect seen in one trial on animals when given at 10-20x human doses will occur in humans
does that mean we should not be concerned at all? - no - of course not.
just like a trial in rats that showed a drug had no harmful effects to the rats does not immediately qualify it as safe to humans.
it just means that we might need to look at the wider picture of all the research on the topic, in vitro studies, animal studies, human trials, clinical use etc and form a balanced opinion.
