the upsides of immunoblot are
-it uses more antigens so you have more chances to detect the human immune responses to Babesia vs just one antigen
-this test also claims to be able to tell what species it is ( if its one of the two they look for anyway)
the downsides are
-its still an indirect test method reliant on antibody responses - and we know that these are not always present as expected in lyme patients (having more antigens to look for mitigates this issue to some degree)
- my guess is there are also some assumptions at work in what species the tests will actually detect - as the common assumption is that only microtii, duncani and divergens are human pathogens in the USA - however there are thought to be 300+ species in the wild and i am having difficulty believing they tested the test against all of these - eg Odecoilei is now coming into prominence with LLMDs and other labs - so how do they know it detects all of these - my guess is they target antigens that they think are present in all babesia - but this is different from testing that it actually does detect them
i don't mean to dissuade or discourage you - just to inform so you go in with eyes
open
i think as with many lyme and co tests - you could well get a clear positive result from the test and that would be pretty clear cut - positive for infection with babesia
i am just saying that for the reasons above - i think there is still an unquantified chance of a false negative - with the info provided by Igenex so far - its hard to define what that chance is
so its the negatives and / or equivocal that are much harder to interpret
i guess you could email them to ask if they have evaluated the test against species B. Odecoilei, B. Divergens and B. Venoratum - some of the emerging species known to be pathogenic to humans.
if they have - that would build some confidence
overall i don't think it a bad test - just that none of the tests we have for lyme or any of the others are perfect - and all have their ins and outs
testing is such a surprisingly complex subject.....
