ME/CFS is a description of signs and symptoms, like migraine and fibromyalgia. It is a syndrome, not a disease, because being diagnosed with it does not imply a known cause.
Tick-borne infections, however, are a disease because, while they have some characteristic signs and symptoms, those signs and symptoms are triggered by a known cause - the infections themselves.
Thus, a person can have both Lyme and ME, and in my view people often do have both. I consider my ME/CFS to have been triggered by tick-borne infections. In the same vein, I have other syndromes - like POTS and MCAS - that were also triggered by tick-borne infections.
With some doctors, I get further by talking about tick-borne infection history. With others, I get further by talking about ME/CFS. I consider them both to be accurate diagnoses, in my case, and I feel like being able to tell mainstream doctors that I have ME is helpful because at least then they have some framework of understanding, albeit imperfect, rather than saying I have chronic Lyme and basically having them write me off as nuts.
