Has anyone come across any protocols to treat long COVID?

I'm interested both in mainstream and alternative medicine options, including things you personally might not agree with. smile I imagine there is significant overlap with chronic TBD, CFS/ME, and reactivated EBV, so we're likely to be coming across these things.

A friend has developed long COVID, and I realized my resources are all a couple of years old now. Most of what I read just sounds like treating symptoms, like the usual things we do in this community for MCAS, POTS, and the other "post-infectious" conditions that overlap.

I had a "long" version of some other virus in 2018, and I was left groping in the dark to figure out how to get better. I'm hoping at least some progress has been made. Maybe the only progress has been the grudging mainstream medical acceptance of the idea that an infectious disease can cause symptoms for months or years after its acute stage!

Otherwise, I don't have much else to offer, as I've not followed Long COVID (LC) too closely.

Admittedly, it irritated me to see so many healthcare institutions spring into action to start LC pages on their websites with numerous articles and resources along with lists of doctors and nurses working to help LC patients. Obviously, this is good and noble. I don't want anyone to suffer. But, what about "Long" Lyme patients and the many other chronic illnesses that have affected untold millions of people for decade after decade?

Anyway, I did a cursory search for "Long COVID" on Bit-Chute, and, unsurprisingly, there were a lot of search results. I don't have the mental stamina to deal with all of that, but I did see a video by Dr. Tom Cowan. So, if you've not already checked sites like Bit-Chute, Rumble, YouTube, etc., maybe you'll get lucky with them.

Atovaquone and/or nitazoxanide worked fine for me.

I did need to keep taking it for a few weeks, even after I felt better. If you stop too soon, you can get a rebound case.

the most convincing work i have seen to date - in terms of uncovering the root cause of Long Covid - is a series of papers by researchers Pretorius and Kell

they have demonstrated abnormal amyloid micro clots in long covid patiets and i think ME/CFS patients also
the causative mechanism seems to be inflammation of the endothelial cells that line the blood vessels ( sound familiar? the same cells that most tick borne infections cause inflammation in ) this seems to trigger a cascade of events that result in abnormal clotting, platelet activation and ongoing inflammation - even after the initial trigger is removed.
they have done some proof of concept trials with platelet activation inhibitors and anticoagulants that did show benefit in long covid patients

i posted about it on the forum some months ago as i was struck by the similarities between the mechanism and symptoms they describe - and those from say Bartonella

my own slides clearly show extensive platelet activation and amyloid clots

We mention inflammation a lot here, of course a lot is assumed, although some can be measured. In this case, does anyone know which inflammatory marker would work to measure this.

I have found in the past, the most popular blood test markers were not even triggered by lyme. Its always the oddball inflammation tests that get elevated it seems.

yep there are many pathways that produce inflammation - the lazy low cost measures of C-reactive protein and ESR are always low in my case

i have considered having broad cytokine panel done - but have not dug into which one would be best / useful

this paper describe the mechanism that Pretorius and Kell believe is involved - its a type of ischemia reperfusion injury releasing free radicals that do the damage

I recently heard Dr McCullough speak of randomized trials he had been working on using nattokinase and bromelain. He didn’t mention lumbrokinase, but it is supposed to be the strongest proteolytic enzyme. It sounded like the main focus, as others mentioned, is on the abnormal clotting.

Also, just a reminder in regards to the endothelial cells that Astroman mentioned, Buhner recommended Japanese knotweed to PROTECT THE ENDOTHELIUM at all costs. Knotweed is cheap if you buy it as powder in the 1 lb bags. My memory is sketchy, but didn’t Buhner mention that knotweed can thin the blood so should be used with caution in those on blood thinners?

So, Japanese knotweed plus nattokinase (or similar) would probably be a smart treatment foundation.

One other thing . . . .

If a person with long COVID is experiencing primarily chronic fatigue or exercise intolerance, low energy, reduced stamina, muscle fatigue, then Alinia could potentially help. Alinia has helped me with those particular issues more than anything else, although I am not sure why.

Unfortunately, my results, while good, haven’t been permanent thus far. I feel like I need to do a 7-10 day round 2-3 times a year.

I don’t know about long-term, but as far as symptoms relief remember the H2 blocker Famotidine helps for that. It seems to help with the inflammation. Again we’re assuming inflammation that most of us are not going to measure with the test.. From my experience, it helped body soreness which I had all over the place from Covid.

But since it’s an H2 blocker, one wouldn’t want to take this, long-term it might render digestion.

Lymestop does. And if it’s only long covid it’s like $45 for specific infections outside of the “Lymestop” package.

Not looking to get into a Lymestop debate here but they have a point for treating it as well. And as someone who’s thrown resources at a lot of things.. something really interesting going on with their approach. I’ve been 3 times now.

You're much less likely to have side effects from atovaquone or nitazoxanide, than from taking high levels of theobromine from dark chocolate.

Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's a good idea.
