Just a little ER rant

I had to go into the ER today; it was one of my worst ER experiences.  The nurse asked me when my migraine started and I told her that it had started getting worse about a week ago (I have migraines every day).  She actually glared at me after I said that!  Then she asked my pain level and I told her it was about a 9.  She laughed, very condescendingly, and said "No.  A 10 is the highest pain, level 6 is about what you would feel after having surgery and the pain meds have worn off.  So, do you want to give me a more accurate answer?"  I just repeated "It's about a 9".  Once again, she glared at me and took me into another room and turned the light on; how rude is that?!  She tried to tell me that there was no way I was in that much pain because I looked pretty good.  All I could say was "I've had migraines for 4 years.  After a while you get so tired of people seeing that you're in pain and trying to coddle you."  I went to a migraine clinic a couple of years ago and they taught the patients how to not show their pain.  Now I'm being put down for doing what I was taught!

Then the doctor came in and asked me if I would prefer toradol, stadol, demerol or dilaudid  and I told him Dilaudid usually works really well and that I didn't like demerol.  The nurse came in just a little later and gave me a shot of Demerol, which makes me incrediably nauseous and causes me to break out in hives.  They sent me home right after getting the shot and it isn't even working.

Thank you Yana :) I've learned never to annoy the nurse that is going to be giving you a shot...they can really make those things hurt!  I ended up having to go to my doctor the day after I went to the ER because I was so sick from the pain.  But I'm feeling much better now.

I got really lucky with my nurse at the doctor's office, she is the nicest nurse I have ever met.  The first thing she does is turns the light off for me, she keeps the talking to a minimum and she talks very softly.  But boy have I had some bad nurses, and it's the very last thing a person with a migraine needs!

Lol, I did change my name.  I try to be encouraging to the people on here, and I realized it's probably not as encouraging as it could be when it's coming from someone with "hopeless" in their name lol.
