Topamax-Rebound Headache?

Has anyone experienced any type of worsening of headaches when going off Topamax? My son titrated down and just finished with the 25 mg daily. His headaches seem to have gotten worse. The pharmacist told me it was common to have refractory headaches after stopping the dosage. She said it should only last a couple of days but his headaches have been worse all week. He's had a constant migraine.I had to take him to the ER room early this morning and then to the clinic later today for another pain shot.

Hello Mom1029,

I'm not sure about the refractory headaches, but is it possible that the Topomax was helping your son more than he thought and without it they are getting worse again? I've noticed that if the migraines get better really slowly it's easy to not notice it until you take away whatever medication that was helping.

I stopped taking my topamax thinking it really wasn't doing anything because I was still getting headaches. The headaches were worse and after a week or so I went right back down and refilled my RX. My neuro told me it takes 6 months of being on topamax for you to notice it's doing something. Nobody ever told me that before.
