Daughter Admitted to hosptial for refractive migraine that lasted a month.

  I need to vent and this seems like the place to do it. After 4 visits to the neuro. in 3 weeks., meds. medral dose pack, a nerve block, 3 trips to ER my 27 year old daughter was admitted to the hospital last night.  she could barely sit up without nausea and dizziness. The pain would not let up except when she slept, and then stabbing pains woke her from her sleep. I have been taking care of her and her son all this time. She has been almost totally debilitated. I cannot believe how some people think migraine is "just a headache" like something you can just make go away. It's a complicated disease from what I have read on line and the migraine is just a symptom. It's a brain disease.

I never had any idea something could cause someone so much pain.  I empathize with all of you all that suffer from migraines. Until someone goes through this, or someone you love goes through it, it is hard to believe that someone could live in that kind of pain constantly

 They are doing an infusion  tonight, the nurse told works. 

BTW, it wasn't her neuro doctor that put her in there. I think they just let you suffer. I told the emergency room doctor.. whatever you have to do, get her admitted. I will not take her home again full of painkillers and go through another day of this.  She called her GP and whoever that was on call admitted her. I think she must have been afraid I would camp there if she didn't get her in. And. she is seeing another neurologist at this hospital. The one she went to didn't seem to have a bit of empathy, and just expected her to bear it. Hell, she said it's far worse than labor pains.

So glad I found this post. I have refractory migraines, and have taken so many migraine meds, nothing is helping. I am being sent to UVA in Charlottesville Va for iv DHE treatment. Hopefully this will break the daily chronic migraines. I feel drained and just so tired of being in pain everyday. If it's not a full blown migraine then there is still head pain. I had brain surgery in 2002, thankfully that surgery was a suceess, but these migraines have gotten much worse these past couple of years. All my neurologist wanted to do was keep giving me different anti seizure medications and that did nothing. I've tried all the triptans, but can't take them due to the terrible side effects. I worry about this DHE treatment, so afraid of the side effects I've read about, but at this point I have to do something to break this cycle. Wishing your daugther the very best!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I sure hope this works for you. We have alot in common, I cannot take the classic migraine meds either. The triptans made me really sick too, so did any antiseizure med (and I think I tried them all), ergots did nothing at all for me. The only thing that takes my daily headache down to a livable level and keeps the migraines down to a minimum is oxycontin. This has been my miracle drug that gave me my life back. I am lucky enough to have a doctor that will prescribe it. I hope you get some relief soon, let us know how the DHE works.

So sorry I have not gotten back to this post. Thanks for writing to me and for the support for my daughter.  MY life has been so busy taking care of Jamie's little boy, and then had another family emergency while all this was going on.

Jamie is out of the hospital. She spent 6 days in there. She was given DHE infusions every 8 hours for several days. She was also given Depacoate and a betablocker,and was gradually taken down off of morphine to a lower dose of pain killer and left the hospital  on Medrin along with the betablocker.  Hard to remember it all.  It all seems like a dream but she did get pain free while she was in there. She said she thought it was while she was getting the DHE but they only lasted 2 days because her veins kept collapsing and she didn't want to have a central line put in. ( I think it means running it through her heart.

She was so grateful to be out of pain and a few days after she got home they started back again, but not nearly as bad. They sent her home on the Beta Blocker and medrin and one that she was on when she went into the hospital?? 

We went to her neuro today and .. He was quite different from the last time we saw him.  Said.. "I see that the nerve block didn't work."  DUH!!  HE took lots of time with her today. Told her that the hospital report said that she was supposed to be released on Depacoate . from what the notes said, but wasn't, so he put her back on it along with the Beta Blocker and a nasel spray DHE. He told her that he could have put her in the hospital and given her those treatments. I just about lost it.  I told him that we called his office and asked them if he would possibly admit her because she was in so much pain, and they said he doesn't admit ppl to the hospital for migraines.  Go Figure???   IT was after that that we went to another ER on the other side of town that he wasn't affiliated with.  And the rest is history.  They got her in.  I would have taken up residence in the waiting room if they hadn't and would have been really nasty.. LOL.. she had been way too sick. She said her whole body hurt from head to toe.

So tonight we are hopeful and prayerful.   She has used the spray, taken the depocoate and is putting her little one down for the night. OH, he took her off the Medrin, said it would cause rebound.  That's  

 What a pain this has all been.. lol.. gotta laugh or I will cry.

I so hope that the other ones that have posted get some relief from their suffering. I will keep you all in my

prayers and thoughts and will continue to write and you all do too.

I'm leaving to go to UVA in Charlottesville Va this Wed. Sept 22nd. I'm praying the DHE intravenous treatments work, and I won't have any bad adverse side effects. Glad to hear your daugther is feeling better. Dealing with migraines is rough.
