antidepressants for migraines.

Does anyone take a daily antidepressant to control migraines.

I only get one or two migraines a month and they can last 1 to 2 days. Is this something worth considering? Does it make more sense to treat the migraine since it's only about 3 days of the month that are effected?

Does estrogen effect migraines?

I'm new here. Hi. I don't know the answer to your question. Have you ever taken an antidepressant? Has your doctor recommended this for you? I have Hemicrania Continua. I was offered an antidepressant but. Refused because I have taken them before....for anxiety, to quit smoking, etc. Tried a few different ones and none of them agreed with me...but thats me. I got no benefit...only unwanted side effects. I was initially diagnosed with cluster but I dont have that. For headache, I believe they offer tricyclic anti depressant. You can try it and see how it works for you. I just wonder if you should focus on an abortive since your headache is so infrequent. Not that four days of headache is acceptable...it's not. It sucks. I have one everyday for the last 18 months.

I am sure I have not helped you much but I figured I would reply to say hi and give my two cents.

I have never tried an antidepressant and you're right, I hate to take something every single day for a condition that only effects 3 or 4 days a month. I was thinking that I have a generally negative view and perhaps an antidepressant would help to change my perspective and maybe as an added benefit, it would help the migraines. My Neurologist did mention antidepressants being an option but I don't know exactly which she has in mind. I don't want to take anything with weight gain as a potential side effect and I believe the only one without that side effect is Wellbutrin.

I am sorry you're dealing with headaches everyday. I can't imagine how horrible that must be. Have you tried Ponstel? It is an NSAID I take for migraines and it's extremely helpful. I can't take NSAIDs regularly because of my UC. If I could, I would be able to treat these so easily with ponstel. I don't think it's a solution for everyday but it could be helpful when you're feeling really bad.

Years ago, I tried elevil to control migraine. I gained around 100 pounds over a years time and it didnt really help me with the migraine.

Thanks for the feedback Susan. I think I will stay away from taking a daily medication. I gained a lot of weight from prednisone and I am unhappy with my figure.

Notsosick, I never heard of Ponstel but will put on my list to research. Thanks for the tip. I started a new thread asking about Celebrex but no replies. IndomethCine helps but I can tolerate it. Best of luck to you and I hope you find some relief.
