After 5 years of treatment by 4 fantastic neurologists and several hospitalizations for D.H.E. I hit rock bottom while on a Sansert "holiday." I walked away from treatment, slowly stopped all my meds and after a miserable month slowly introduced 5-HTP.
WOW! My headache pattern hasn't changed but the severity is diminished to a point that I am with some pain but almost no disability. I tried slowly reducing the dosage after several months treatment and the disabling pain returned with vengeance then slowly abated with the increase in dosage.
I am currently working with my internist and hoping the improvement continues.
I know it wasn't smart to do what I did but it worked when nothing else, except methysergide (Sansert), triptans, and D.H.E. and high doses of prophylactic drugs did and I hated taking so many drugs at such high dosages for minimal improvement.
I'm sharing because I was without hope and exhausted in treatment and 6 months later, on an OTC drug with few side-effects for me anyway, my joy in life has returned. If things aren't working for you in treatment...have hope...and talk to your internist about this drug. And if not 5-HTP there will be something that will work with your body chemistry.
Best to you all. Daisygirl
