New Member w/Migraines

I hate when they just think that the pain medications are going to help - when all they do is really kind of allow you to sleep for a minute and then you wake up with the headache. I had to be detoxed off pain meds a couple of times - I was so reliant on them that my body needed them or I would get sick from not taking them. I take one pain medication now and it is not even for my migraines (for nerve pain that I have from a bad car accident) and the medication is extended release so it lasts 12 hours and if I miss a dose I am not freaking out like I was when I was on all that stuff for my headaches. The only thing I take for my headaches is execedrin migraine - if I can feel it coming and Imitrex if it is already here. And I occasionally have to take Phenergan for nausea. I don't take anything else for migraines. I have never, in 20 years, been able to take an over the counter med for my headaches. Until this last year.
Have you heard of peripheral nerve decompression surgery? I had it done a year ago and go back for the second surgery that will hopefully end my migraines (after 20 years of suffering) on 10 February. My doctor is Dr. Ivica Ducic at Georgetown University Hospital. Go to his website and check out the information. Not sure where you live, but you can research to see if anyone does it in your area. My insurance paid 100% and it was worth it to me. I didn't have a single migraine for almost 4 months after surgery and then they slowly started coming back but not in the same way. So he thinks that if he can go in and just remove the nerves in my occipital region (which is where he did the decompression) that I shouldn't have any more migraines. It will cause numbness on my scalp but who cares? The peripheral nerves do not control anything but sensation on the scalp and the numbness is so mild that you hardly notice it. I know because he took the two lesser nerves completely out, of the six he did the surgery for. I started an antidepressant for my migraines a few months ago and i've had amazing results. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you're open to it.

Thank you all for your replies, i have tried preventative meds and i had bad side affects from them so i was taken off, i also know what the cause is, i have an allergy to the uv rays in the sun and lights, i wear sun glases during the day if the sun is out and wear glases at work with protection on them but all that im trying isnt working, my doctor for some reason will not put me forward to see a Neurologist, was told i had to learn to live with them which i think is unfair, my life is being controlled by migraines and has been for several yrs now, this one i have now has been the longest so far,

i have tried several preventatives and i suffered side affects so had to stop taking them, i get on well with my doctor and find her great when it comes to most things but when it comes to headaches she doesnt seem that interested, i have spent the last month with this head ache taking 8 tablets a day to try and get rid of the pain but they dont always work, so when i saw her on monday i thought she might of done something but she said there is nothing that can be done, why are doctors not more concerned when it comes to head aches, it could be something more serious, really not sure what to do or where to go next, my doctors practice dont allow you to see any other doctor than the one you are registerd with unless they are on holiday, when you do see another doctor they dont like doing alot because your not their patient, i cant afford to go private or i would, thank you for your reply notsosickgirl
