waking up with headaches (almost every morning) at the base of head at the top of the neck.

I have been waking up with headaches several days of the week. The headaches are at the base of my head in the back. I have gone to the Chiropractor several times. I have tried several different pillows. Nothing seems to help except a lot of pain relievers. I try not to take them unless it starts feel like a migraine. I don't want to take pain medication and get rebound headaches. Some days the pain radiates to above my eyes.
I am looking for possible reasons.

My suggestion would be to check with your dentist to see if you have any wear on your teeth that could suggest clenching or night grinding. They can make a splint that helps the teeth (but just gives you something else to grind down).
My other thought would be to have your chiro check the ligaments connected to your jaw. I for years had problems with TMJ and my dentist told me I would have to have surgery to fix it. Two visits to my chiro with attention to the jaw (painful procedure that includes finding the tender or knotted piece of the ligament and bearing down on it to release the knot) and not only has my TJM subsided but I also don't see to have as much issues with waking up with soreness around my temples.

I wake up the same way and after YEARS of this.  I was told to talk to my Dr about this last night.

Day 3 of a score of 10 in the pain scale and I was in the hospital  the Dr on call said it really sounds like this.

Occipital Neuralgia - I've heard of just about every headache out there but this one.  I asked if this could be why even my pillow causes pain and he said very likely.

I have looked into the dentist about clenching teeth and that and that does not apply for me.
