child cannot go to school- constant migraine pain

Hello, i am a mother at her wits end!! My son is 12 yrs old. He was dropped on his head 3 years ago by the coach at football practice. 2 weeks later, he started screaming from excruciating head pain. The ER at Childrens Hospital diagnosed him with Post Concussive Syndrome. He missed 5 months of school, until he awoke one morning with no pain. I was worse at night, he couldn't lie down. Since that time he has been diagnosed with chronic migraines.The pain is still excruciating at night when he tries to lie down. He has missed 4 months or more from school during the last 3 school years. Neurologist has prescribed Topomax,4 a day,Amitryptiline, 2 a night and indomethacin, 50 mg every 6 hours. But he still missing at least 2 weeks out of school a month. No relief. His pain is in the forehead area and the top of his head is sore to the touch. he has no classic migraine symptoms!! Medicine does not work!! Any input at all would be appreciated!!

I am sitting with my 17 year old son in a hospital in Atlanta with the same exact symptoms. He's always had issues with headaches and migraines, but now he has had one for 10 days that won't go away. Three headache specialists and a 3-day hospital stay and no one can knock it out. In fact, I think they (the doctors) think it's all in his head and they are sending him home to "learn to deal with it." Is it a migraine? A tension headache? We don't know. He has taken all of the same drugs and recently went on this Raskin cocktail for 2-1/2 days. He's had message. Now I'm going to a altenernative medicine doctor. I've taken him to the acupuncturist 1x, but I think we're going to go a few times. He's getting a sleep study next Saturday and I'm going to a chiropractor next week. Obviously the drugs aren't helping. It's so tough as a parent to watch your child suffering like this. I know part of my son's issue is stress induced. I'm tempted to take him off of all the drugs and just see what happens.

Oh mommies, Although I feel pain for your kids, I am tired of writing same thing over and over to help ya all folks. Please go through other threads where I have posted and find some information to get you going.

BTW, if the doc thinks, if its 'in his head', fire that doc, find another one. Tell them, its just 'not in the head' stupid, it REALLY hurts. Don't take the kids off the meds.

It's not going to be the same thing for everyone. 11/6 I was in the hospital with my son who was hooked up to IV's for 4 days. This morning, after his sleep study last night, we found out my son has sleep apnea which means never having enough sleep and headaches. We are still taking him to an upper cervical chiropractor in the morning just in case he has something out of place pushing on a muscle or nerve giving him a headache (very possible). We spent an hour with his pediatrician on Friday and realized he wasn't having migraines. Everyone called them that, but he wasn't having other migraine symptoms except for the pain. He was able to function. His ped said it could be sleep apnea OR he could be producing too much spinal fluid in which case they gave him an MRI. It is comes back negative and if the sleep study didn't show anything, then they were going to do a spinal tap. So for those of you with chronic headaches, three possibilities:

1) sleep apnea
2) Producing too much spinal fluid which causes pressure on the brain and severe headaches
3) Something out of whack with your neck or spine. Don't let a chiro touch you without doing xrays.

Now that we know it's sleep apena, we can do something about it.

If CSF is a problem then they usually install a 'drain' and the problem is fixed. I was suggested that but it turns out I don't have that problem.

Sleep apnea is possible cause of migraine but the individual usually feel fatigued, irritated through out (not necessary though). I have sleep apnea and some days I do feel like it but I noticed that my migraine does not start from there.

If your children are athletes then a head injury can be a reason of these headaches.

If you have figured out possible causes then you made your child's a lot more easy. After 5 years of constant migraines, I am still clueless where they come from..

From the description of the obvious trauma, he needs to get to a chiropractor quickly who specializes in Gonstead. While an upper cervical doctor is a good choice they only look at 2 to 3 bones and forget the rest of the possibilities in the spine. With the proper adjustment, these symptoms SHOULD be gone very quickly.
