Migraine Causing Nose Bleeds

Hi! I'm new here. I checked previous posts looking for something similar to my symptoms. I had a headache yesterday and it's only at the back of my head. It was so immediate and painful yet I did not take pain killers like I used to. I tried to sleep it off for about 20 minutes but the pain just increased. I gave up the thought of sleeping and checked my emails instead. That's when, I felt dizzy and felt something warm rushing down my right nostril. When I touched my nose with a finger I saw some blood on it. I immediately wet a towel and apply it at the back of my head to stop the bleeding, and it did after several minutes. Then I took pain killers to stop the pain in my head from increasing further. The pain was gone after more than an hour.

My question is, did anyone experience nose bleeds from migraine?

I have not experienced symptoms like this with my migraines. However, I don't know everything :) If it's something new for you it might be good to run it past your doctor. If you have a primary care physician you could give them/their nurse a call and describe the new symptoms? Maybe go take a peek on the allergies forum and ask them if they've ever experienced something like this?

Nick, I have suffered migraines my whole life, never heard of this situation.

I strongly suggest you call your doctor and make an appointment asap. If it happens again, go to the ER before the nose bleed hits.

Much better safe than sorry.

Thanks guys! I already called my doctor's office but the staff informed me that he's traveling abroad and will be back by the end of the month. I still made an appointment though. So far, there's no recurrence of the bleeding but the headache comes and goes but not daily.

@AJG25 - I'll check with allergies forum if they experienced something about this.

@BnotAfraid - I'll take your advice to go to ER when bleeding happens again.

Hi Nick! I do experience nose bleeds but they are not related to migraine. They happened due to extreme weather condition. What you have maybe two separate health issues that best consulted with a doctor. Hope you will find time to do it.

There can be many reasons of nosebleed. My friend has migrane and she's had nosebleed but not sure of the reason. Better get checked asap. Sending good vibes.

Definitely want to get checked by a physician. I would think a MRI or CAT scan would be needed in this situation. Extremely elevated blood pressures can cause nose bleeds and headaches.

Nose bleeds can be cause by many things, but one thing that is sometimes seen is a deficiency of Vitamin K. This could be from dietary issues, genetics, small intestine issues, or from antibiotics. Another issue could be a deficiency of copper. The copper/ceruloplasmin complex is eventually responsible for blood clotting. Many people have gotten relief of headaches by taking magnesium, I'd bet that copper supplementation would be as or more effective than magnesium.

Hi everyone! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on what's maybe bothering me. I'm re-posting here my reply on the allergies forum.

"I saw my doctor last week and he had two things for me, allergy and high blood pressure.

The pain in the back of the head prior to nose bleed is an indication of a high blood pressure. I have a fondness for salty foods and its starting to affect my body. He put me on a low-salt diet for a month to check if the blood pressure is still manageable else, he will prescribe medicines to control it. Enough sleep and regular exercise were also advised as stress can also cause my blood pressure to rise. I’m guilty about not having enough exercise. I was so busy working at the office that all I want to do at the end of the day was to go home and rest.

The dry weather also contributes to the nose bleed as I already have allergic rhinitis and I was told to use a humidifier in my room to keep the air moist. Could you give me tips on what brand to purchase please? Thank you for all your help guys!"

You can try checking eBay or Amazon for a good humidifier. Just remember to read the reviews for the product to help you decide on what would be best for you.
