My son is 14 and has been haveing a terrible time we've had him on verapamil, depakote, topamax and now wellbutrin for preventatives and nothing seems to be working. Not imitrex, relpax, or exedrin either. I am in the process now of switching nurologists to see if He can get better care. I am trying a pediatric nurologist. He has a migraine nearly every day I would say 6 out of 7 days. Is this normal? he says it feels like a charley horse in his head. also throws up most days has numbnes in arms. the whole range of symptoms. he has missed considerable school days. And even though I had his general doctor write the school a letter they have called social sevices and want to proceede to remove him from the home for truancy. What do I do?

I have very limited income so I can't really afford a lawyer. Any of you have any ideas what I can do?

Hi Yori,

Sorry to hear your son is having such a rough time. You need to find a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist first and foremost. Where do you live? Your Doctor needs to write to Social Services to explain the situation and that it is not truancy before any action is taken. I am so sorry you are going through all this!!

A Headaches Specialist will understand and be far more knowlegeable about your sons situation than a general Neurologist. Hang in there and let us know how you get on!

if you have doctor excusses they have no legal right to remove your son from your home. when i was in highschool I missed ALOT of school, and all it took was a letter from the doctor.
I'm so sorry you have this problem to add to the pain of dealing wiht a child with migraines.
Meet in person with the school board/truancy officer.

I'm going to call my sons nurologist today. The school has a letter from his regular doctor but they don't feel that is good enough. They asked me if I would bring him to a psycologist for an evaluation which I did. They were thinking he had school phobia and was making up the migraines.The psycologist told them last week he saw no reason why my son could not go to school. Of course my son was having a good day that day. But that doesn't matter he has no expertise in the area of migraines. I'm just doing everything the school tells me. The principle calls all the time and harasses me. She says its not personal she's worried about her job. I have crohns disease and I'm starting to flare over the stress this is causing me. Thanks for the replies. I looked up on the net and they have a headache clinic about 200 miles away. I think this is the closest. I live in a small town in ND.

I really feel for you, you need to stand strong, it is incredibly selfish of this principle to be worried about her job she should have the best interest of your son's education in mind!!!!! I hope your son's Neurologist can back you up in some way to support you and your son.

Meanwhile, you can come here and vent and talk to us whenever you need to! Do you keep a Headache Diary for your son? If not, may I suggest you do, as that is proof of what he goes through that can be shown to the Principle of the School!!! You could offer them a copy (keeping the original for yourself of course!)
