Stabbing pain in head

I'm a 17 year old male. about 3 months back, I suddenly started experiencing rather painful stabbing pains located behind my left eye that lasted about 1 to 2 seconds.

Since then the stabbing pain has been in all these location:
- Behind my left eye
- Behind my right eye
- Above my left eye
- Above my right eye
- On the side of my nose
- In my left/right eye
- On the top of my ear...

The pain lasts between 1 to 10 seconds. It is quite severe sometimes...other times not so. In a typical day I could have between 1 to several hundred of these stabbing pains. I went quite a few days without any, but then they came back.

I have seen:
- A GP (a general practitioner, I dont know what you call them in america) who referred me to a neurologist.
- A dentist (who looked at my wisdom teeth) who said there was nothing wrong (with my wisdom teeth, however this is probably not the cause).
- An optician who did a full test on my eyes and found nothing (and my eyes are in good health)

My neurologist appointment is next month and I am very doubtful that he will know what is wrong. Hopefully I will get an MRI scan.

I've tried Ibuprofen on a day when the stabbings are very frequent...it has little or no effect. Paracetemol seems to work slightly better, but it is still hard to tell as the pains are completely random.

(I do get migraines about once a year, and the symptoms are totally different, so it's not a migraine)

Hi,

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with these pains. Sounds like Primary Stabbing Headache to me, but I am not a Doc! The treatment for that is Indomethacin. If you get no joy from your Neuro you need to find one who is a Headache Specialist!

seems strange that suddenly I start getting these and it seems that I will have them for the rest of my life now

I may get in touch if my neurologist doesnt give any real help, thanks

You need to get a MRI and CT Scan. Have them look for anything, including inflammation. Request a copy of your results, and take them to another neurologist for a second opinion. I personally find great help from teaching hospitals. It took a teaching hospital to find my tumor. Well, after two weeks of GP, 1 week hospitalized for what they thought was a "Massive infection", then I was put in a teaching hospital. Teaching hospital,did a biopsy and found my problems. Yea, it revealed 3 problems, just not one jeez. I reckon you don't have a tumor. The moral of the story is: teaching hospitals are great, and to never give up on a diagnoses, not matter how many doctors you see.

You could be dehydrated, I would try hydrating with coconut water which has proven to be more effective than both Gatorade and water. I like Vita Coco because it's all natural as opposed to Zico which is from concentrate.

hi

I was given propranolol 10mg 3 times a day, which did nothing (the neurologist first advised this)

it was then increased to 80mg once a day (slow release) which did nothing

and now I've been given amitriptyline (after I told me gp that the propranolol isn't working)

what do I do? I'll have to try the amitriptyline but I doubt it's going to work

Please disregard the above post, as it is spam. Try the medication the doctor wants you to try, how do you know it wont work if you dont try it? Its all a process to see what works and doesn't.

hi

because people come across these threads when googling, I'll mention that the amitriptyline did have an affect (20mg/day) in that it's reduced the frequency of the pain by about 70~80%. I tried some indometacin (75mg SR) a few times, it got rid of most of the pain for a few hours but I felt terribly dizzy. I only tried it a couple of times so I don't know if I would have got used to it as I stopped because of the dizzyness, but I still have it incase I have a bad day (which is rare now).
