D.H.E. treatment for migraines

  Have any of you went through D.H.E. treatments for your intractable migraines?  I have had migraines for many years now, but as time has gone by they have gotten so much worse. I have migraines almost everyday. A good week for me is 3-4 migraines. I went to see a neurologist yesterday from the UVA Hospital located in Charlottesville Va.  After talking to him for a while and going over all the medications that I had tried to relieve the migraines, he decided that sending me to UVA to go be admitted to the hospital to have D.H.E. iv treatments.

  Have been reading as much as I can on D.H.E. for migraine treatment. I have read a lot of positive as well as negative results, but when you've tried everything what do you have to loose?   It's really affected my quality of life. It's very hard for me to make plans ahead of time not knowing if I'll have a migraine or not.  I can't even baby sit my grandbabies as often as I'd like to.  I want to take back my life and end this terrible cycle of migraines.   If you've been to a headache clinic and has this procdure please let me know what your experience has been with this treatment.

I can't really go into detail because of rules on my medical advise. But I can say personally, I have not ever tried it. But when I had migraines almost every day, I tried everything. It was a blind medical study that gave me most of my life back, topamax (and I had the real drug). There's preventive treatments, and you definatlly need it. In my books, go for it, it is worth a shot. I mean its not like you can get more migraines right? hehe I go for anything to help cure me :P another thing, right down everything you eat, drink in a journal. notate when a migraine comes along, and show the neuro.

Hi Mercyme,

I have had DHE myself and it did help my migraine. Everyone has a different result as we all react differently to medications.

Just a tip, ask for the infusions to be run over 2 hours and not 1 as although you are given anti-sickness meds you can feel quite sick if it goes through in one hour, but again everyone is different!

If this does help you, discuss with your Neuro having this done every three months as it can build up in your system so the more you have the longer the relief lasts!

I was almost painfree during infusions but got a bit of a rebound immediately afterwards before I got a couple of weeks relief! Best thing for you is to try it and see if your Neuro thinks this is a good idea. Do however, bear in mind and discuss with your Neuro any potential side effects in the long term.

   Thank you for all the info. I am still waiting to hear from UVA and my insurance company to see if it will be approved. I'm kinda of scared of the side effects that I have read about with having DHE.  On the otherhand I'll do anything to get some relief.  it cam a storm here last night and I had a terrible migraine. I never noticed having migraines when the weather changes, but have become more aware of my migraines and when they start.  My triggers are bright lights, sound, weather changing, menstral cycle.   So glad to hear that the DHE treatment helped you Annuk, I sooo hope it works for me. I have to travel 6 hours to UVA for this treatment.  crossing fingers xxx.

I had the DHE treatments Sept 22 through the 25th. I fealt good in the hospital, but after just a few days the migraines starting come back, they aren't as bad as they before I had the DHE. I mean the intensity isn't as bad. I woke up the Sat. morning with a migraine and go up to take migrnal nasal spray, it has been helping me when I get a migraine. I'm wondering how long this DHE treatment will work before the migraines come back full force. Trying to stay Positive!

It's Sunday and I wake up with a full-blown migraine. I get up and go to church anyway, only to find myself having to go out during praise and worship. I know this isn't the way my life should be. I had the DEH treatments on Sept 22nd thourgh the 25th. Maybe this is a rebound migraine. hoping they don't start everyday. The neurologist gave me migranal nasal spray, but I can't tell much difference.
