DHE Protocol

Hi, I have had DHE protocol in the hospital through IV. Do any of you know if the same drug comes in a tablet/pill form?? I've heard that it comes in injectable form, but my pharmacy can't get it. The DHE that I had in the hospital helped while I was there, but after I came home my migraines came back. I have chronic migraines. I am on my way to pick up a prescription for Cambia, which I have never had and am a little nervous about taking it due to the side effects.

I was on IV DHE in the hospital as well for about half a month earlier this year (on and off). I was finally prescribed Migranal - which is a nose spray version of this very old medicine. It is pricey. Pre-insurance it costs around 900$ for a box of 8 bottles (each has a couple of doses). Bad thing is, you can only use a few times a week - and you can't use within 24 hours of using a triptan. I also only spray in one nostril, because i found that it stuffs you up completely if you spray it in both - and I take a sudafed along with it, to stop the constant sniffing.

My husband had used dhe years ago - and at the time he was giving himself injections to treat it (the medicine came in small ampules). I am not sure - but I don't think this is available any longer.

I am sure asking your neuro or primary care doc, they can find out about migranal and if it is appropriate for you.

This has not been a fix-all for me and I don't think was ever as effective as the hospital/iv treatment regimen - but definitely worth discussing with your doc.
