The American Academy of Neurology will be presenting new guidelines for the prevention of migraines at their yearly conference in New Orleans. These guidelines will also be published in the Neurology journal and may reportedly help migraine sufferers in controlling the frequency and intensity of their headaches. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, 36 million people in the United States suffer from migraines and the National Headache Foundation reports that 70% of all headaches reported are experienced by women. Natural supplements, such as butterbur extract, which has recently been proven in clinical trials to be an effective treatment, are among the recommendations presented in the guidelines.
Patients who have a difficult time finding relief will allegedly benefit the most from the new guidelines on preventive treatment. Taken daily, these preventive treatments are designed to inhibit the onset of an attack and can typically reduce the severity and length of the headache. It is estimated that 38% of the people who suffer from migraines would benefit from preventive treatment and less that ⅓ of them will try, according to Stephen D. Silberstein M.D., from the Jefferson Headache Research Center and author of the new guidelines.
