Those who have tried amitryptiline, did you acclimate to it and have to raise the dosage? Was there a dosage at which it worked for a long time? What's the highest dosage you tried before deciding it wasn't working?
I've had migraines since I was 17, but for most of my life they were a couple a month and excedrine generally took care of them. In the past few years they've gotten more frequent. I was on amitryptiline for about a year, at 25mg. It didn't seem to affect the migraines much (did help my insomnia though, for a while.) I stopped taking it for about six months, and was recently put back in it, at a dosage of 50mg. It worked immediately - I had had several days of migraines and the first day after starting the new dosage I could feel that the migraine was...sort of blocked is the best way I can describe it. That was about 3 months ago and now it doesn't seem to be working. I've had several migraine days this week and at least one each week for the past several weeks.
So I'm wondering, is my body acclimating to the medication? I could raise the dosage, but wouldn't I just acclimate again and have to raise it again, and so on? What's the upper limit on amitryptiline? My doctor offered me to try topamax but I'm concerned about side affects. I haven't seen a headache specialist yet (though I think it might be time to) so it's just my regular primary care doctor at the moment.
