Possible Help with Complex Migraines

Hi. everyone! I’m a moderator in the fibro but I have a friend who has gotten complex migraines for years...several a week! One of the last ones she had, half her tongue went numb, had tingling on the same side, etc. She saw several neurologists at a medical school in the area and they suggested her migraines were being caused by allergies!

They sent her to an allergist and he tested her for many things. Naturally pollen, grasses, etc. showed up as allergies but so did alot of various foods! They printed out the list and she has been careful what she eats and is feeling better.

about a month ago she went back for a follow up appointment and the neurologist put her on Claritin and also Zantac. She asked why the Zantac because she didn’t have acid reflux. He said they are finding that Zantac brings down the histamines in the body and it helps prevent these migraines! She started taking them and, as of today, she has only had three very mild headaches...not migraines! She has been suffering with migraines for 60 years!

So I thought I’d pass this on to all of you. It might be a good thing to talk to your doctor about. I guess it’s pretty new so if your doctor knows nothing about it don’t be surprised. But if they say you can take these and they shouldn’t hurt you, then you might see how it works for you. As I tell the fibro members, what works for one does t necessarily work for another. I do hope this wil help you.

Thank you Sherrine,

This is becoming more common among neurologist that care and want to find answers for their clients.

I have been on Claritin since Feb. Instead of helping I now have been manifesting Complex Migraines.
So like all things, everyone is different.

I do want to clarify that I have neurological damage and multiple conclusive disorder on top if it.

Always good to hear when the new way of thinking works for somewhen!!

My Dr. also put me on an anti-histamine and I wondered why. Now, I know as I was having migraines at the time, too. I had had them really bad then went years without any. Also, I have horrible itching for no real reason and it was supposed to help with that.

This is one cause of migraines.

There are others, for instance concussive disorder, Trigeminal Neuralgia, hemicranial continua and damage to nerves to name a few.

Not all migraines are as easily solved, although we wish they were.

This sure wasn’t easily solved for my friend...until she knew what she was dealing with. She has been hunting for answers for years. Her migraines started when she was 11 years old and she is now 71 years old. For 60 years she has been seeing doctors and neurologists and finally one decided to test her for allergies. You wouldn’t believe all the things she is allergic to! So she now has to watch for certain foods and I think the Claritin helps with outside influences that she is allergic to. The Zantac helps with histamines I think she said.

I hope any who are suffering with migraines will see an allergist to rule out allergies. You might get help quickly this way.

Chronic pain is terrible, and we should never stop looking for an answer.

Apologies, I did not intend for my previous post to imply that, and I don't know where the name Jessie came from. I have been struggling lately, is I can say. NO excuse.

Was trying to broaden information.

Trina, no worries! I was just amazed that she saw soooo many doctors over a 60 year period and not one mentioned that migraines could be caused by allergies! It was at a medical school here in my area that FINALLY a doctor wanted to get that checked out. This is the main reason I posted. It sure is worth getting tested if you haven’t already. You were right...it was easily solved once she knew what she was dealing with! So I’m telling anyone who complains about frequent migraines to get checked for allergies. It sure beats having chronic head pain! I don’t get migraines but I can imagine they are absolutely horrible!

yes they are, I used to think sinus headaches were bad. Now I can function with a level 5 migraines. Amazing what a person can tolerate when the don't want to give in

I have a good report! It’s been 2 1/2 months since I started this thread and my friend has had only one headache and it was mild! So the food allergies are what have been causing bad migraines most of her life! So do get checked for that.

about Sherrine's friend using Claritin and zantac some food for thought. Claritin is an H1 blocker. It blocks H1 histamine receptors. Zantac/ranitidine is an H2 receptor blocker. There are even more different histamine receptors, but those 2 have meds available to block them. It sounds very much as though this person has headaches induced by mediators released from mast cells.

These meds take up positions on the histamine receptors of mast cells, also, and stop the cascade of histamine from one mast cell triggering another and another and then another mast cell is activated, and so on.
There is one H2 blocker to watch out for, and I learned this from a mistake Rockon made in choosing it, finding it not helpful, reading about it, and returning to ranitidine as her H2. (I have permission to share this information.)
Her post about the other H2 (blocker/antagonist), The following is all quotes:

Cimetidine, a histamine2 (H2) receptor blocker, lowers DAO (which is to say it's inhibitory), so it should only be used if no others in this class works for you. Diamine oxidase (DAO) is the main enzyme involved in histamine metabolism (breakdown).

pretty sure I have a virus in the sinuses making them so nutty right now, but I tried a couple of cimetidine yesterday, to see if it was a good H2 for me, and now I know that can't have been helpful.

Hi, New member finding my way around. Persistent lyme person, first contact 1965. Migraines were my life, yet I had no name. When I learned "migraine" after childbirth ...started rounds of doctors, interventions, psyche evaluations. Days, weeks, months and I ended up at the "spa" several times. Good news, stopped at menopause.

Eventually found pharma drug Amerge which actually worked. Then Charlotte's Web CBD was developed for children with seizures. This works for migraine ( my dose 1 /2 teaspoon) and seizures aborted in under 1 minute. No association with CW other than they cared and started the CBD movement which helps children and pets and me.

Did you guys ever try using medicinal marijuana for severe headache or migraine? They said that medical cannabis is very effective when it comes to anxiety, migraine, and insomnia. At first, I was doubtful so I started doing my own research and read articles about marijuana. I found out that each marijuana strain has different uses for different diseases. check this This one is very effective when it comes to stress, mild anxiety, and insomnia. Let me hear your two cents with this. Thanks

buds is the best weed for migraines fo all types. according to my neurologist/pain doc. I was doubtful. however, much more effective when I tried it.

Been using it for 6mos. If I smoke when pain is at 6, it will stay down, and complex migraines have not occurred since I have been using weed.

Interesting not. My whole food, nothing artificial, not food dye, no soda drinking 28oz or more of water a day is helping my feel better. Balance is better, pain is lower in am.
