 hi all

signed up to this message board to see if i can help others

im 20 years old, had CDH for the past 5 years, and before that had a lot of stomach problems which were nicknamed "Migraine Tummy".

for my CDH, ive tried so many different drugs, triptans, zomig, gabapentin, etc. None of which have helped me at all

i did some research on the internet and found that Botox injections were being used to treat CDH, but were not a registered treatment

i decided to risk it, i went private, paid £250 +vat to see if this treatment was as good as it was stated. had 8 injections of botox in my forehead, then 8 from my trapezes up to the back of my head.

near enough instantly i felt some relief, and later on that week my headaches went completely! i was so happy.

the botox injections last 3-6 months i think, im not sure if thats only for the first time or everytime, but my CDH has come back and i am having more injections on Tuesday. The cost is a lot, but im prepared to pay it to stop suffering

Im not sure if anyone here is from london area, i had them done in a private hospital in guildford by a Dr A J Dowson.

look into these injections, they have helped me out a lot, it could help some of you out

thats understandable! but i saved the money within 3 months, just didnt spend it on little things i normally would like junk food etc :) the results are amazing though, its a shame it isnt NHS.

Hi Dave, As a single mum and my budget is very tight and there is no room for luxuries, I lose at least two days a month wages as it is due to migraine, nice thought though maybe one day! Ann

My neuro has suggested Botox to me but at $800 every 3 months, there is no way that I can afford that. My insurance does not cover it normally, but my neuro is trying to work magic and get them to for me. If they do, then this is a route that I will definately try.

alright dave, im glad to hear that the botox worked... it didnt work completely for me it definately helped to removed some muscle tension...im going to try other methods, cheers for the mail

im glad other people have seen the treatment. botox is not a luxury! its 16 injections in my head which i didnt like very much! but it helped. last year i lost over 50 days off work due to illness.

Hi there,

I used to suffer from chronic headaches and have recently been able to get a little more control.  I started doing some research about what could cause my headaches and I found the chemicals in the products I use to clean my home and wash my clothes could be the culprit.  I would rather stay away from harsh prescription drugs if I can or at least limit the use.  I found a company that makes personal care and home care products that don't have the harmful toxins in their products...I thought why not try it.  I switched stores and started using only these new products and my symptoms have drastically decreased.  I started thinking about how every morning after I started laundry or cleaned a room before work I would be left with a headache all day but since I have switched that doesn't happen.  Not only has this helped with my headaches but my allergies too and my husband's dry skin.  Since this has made such a difference in my life I just thought I would pass along the idea and maybe help someone else.  If you are interested in learning where to get these products you can email me at ***click the envelope under my username to email me*** and I would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Hi Dave and everyone else,
I have been thinking about trying the botox injections for sometime as I too have been suffering from CDH for many years. Someone gave me Andrew Dowsons details a couple of years ago but I thought I would exhaust all other avenues first which I now have without success. I just wanted to know how long the injections lasted for you. You say in your posting the headaches went completely but your CDH has now come back- how long did your headache free period last? Is there any risk involved? Is there a charge for the initial consultation or is that included in the cost of £250.00 + VAT.
Do I need a GPS referral letter ?I would be grateful for your answers as I am at the end of my tether. I have a permanent severe headache/migraine in the right side of my head. I had to give up work four years ago because of my headaches but would like to get back if possible - botox could be my answer. Sorry to hear about your headaches (mine started aged 13 im now 39) you seem through your determination to have found a solution at an early age - well done and best of luck.

DAVE i am a 20 year old also fromlondon i am desperate also like you, can i ask where were your headaches situated and what was the pain like?

i am very tempted to also try some botox.

I also visited Dr Dowson in Guildford and wasn't sure whether to take him seriously when he mentioned botox - however having suffered crippling chronic tension headache for 18 months with no relief from practically every med under the sun i am willing to give it a go! Just to clarify, was it migraine that you had problems with or tension-type headache or both? Is the botox still working for you? looking any younger?! Hope ur well,

Hi Dave,
Did you try nerve block treatments prior to the botox? That is where they inject (similar to botox injections) the cortison in your neck (ocipital nerve) and temples. I believe they give these to people with fibromalgia as trigger point therapy. Anyway, I live in the states and have managed health care. Although I got a referral to get this done, the HMO denied it and I'm wondering if I should appeal. I too suffer from CDH and would love to get even 3 months of relief!

Hi Dave,

I had Botox injections, and with a letter from my neurologist, my extended health provider (in
Canada) paid the $400 / per visit for it. I had 19 injections 4 times through out the year and it didn't make any difference.

My neurologist uses it for many of his patients but doesn't have a 100% success rate. I'm not sure how high his success rate is.

hi, i am under PROF GOASDBY, in london and i have undergone 2 seperate BOTOX treatments.

the 1st treatment almost gave me 90% relief from the tension side of the headache, but only last 2 weeks,

the 2nd treatment made matters worse, i had a severe cluster type migraine for over 12 days!!!....

it did not work, and i conclude BOTOX is not a great form of pain relief.


CAN SOMEONE CREATE A POST WHERE SERIOUS DIAGNOSES & CURES have been FOUND.......????

Hi everyone. I had 3 cervical medial nerve blocks that gave me about 60% relief for a few weeks. The pain specialist injected an anesthesia in my neck and then about 4 or 5 injections of I believe some type of steroid. He uses xrays and dye to locate the nerve. My doctor is reluctant to give information concerning the medicine or its effectiveness, so I stopped seeing him. He suggested radiofrequency lesioning as this is supposed to give relief for 3 months to a year, sometimes 6 to 18 months. For this they give a sedative and anesthesia and use xrays and dye to locate the offending nerve  It's said to less uncomfortable. However, I refused because the nerve blocks are painful (other people have reported very little discomfort and it may depend on your doctor) and the right side of my head--from the temple to the base of my skull-- (where the headache is) is still sore and sensitive to the touch. I can't sleep on that side. My shoulders are now feeling tired after an hour or so on the computer. I am afraid radiofrequency may cause more problems as has the nerve blocks. I took Depakote ER 1000 mg for years as a preventive and it eliminated the pain after 6 to 8 weeks or so, but I had breakthrough pain after 15 years or more of taking it. Could have been emotional stress (brother died and parents). Anyway, I am going to start it again with my internist. The pain specialist prescribed Neurontin--400 mg daily-- and after 4 weeks, it hasn't helped at all. I am taking Advil or acetamenophen (Tylenol) until it kicks in but I'm becoming afraid of rebound headache or kidney or liver problems with long term use. Well, maybe this info. will help somebody, but we are all different. I have other health problems that may make treatment difficult--bipolar disorder, HNP, Diabetes. God Bless.
