Can Ambien help MS Patients?

Has anyone seen or read the story about brain injury patient becoming more responsive with the use of Ambien?  Here is a site I found http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=2154940&page=1. 

 

There are some reports that after taking Ambian, instead of causing the patient to sleep it actually stimulated the receptors in the brain and allowed them to talk again.

 

All I can say is WOW!!!  What if this could help my Wife?  In a previous post, I mentioned that my wife was diagnosed with MS back in 2001 and due to the rapid progression her normal functions have declined severely.  She stopped talking about 8 months ago and other than eye contact and a smile there is no communication.  

 

I am going to talk to my Nuro about this drug.  Hey what can we loose?  Right?  If I can get her to say something that would be the best present that we could ever receive.

 

Any thoughts??

I had not seen that news story.  I take ambien for insomnia.  It does not work as well as when I first started taking it about a year and a half ago.  Maybe this is why I was awake msot of the night after taking it???

Well my nuro just gave me a prescription for Ambien today. He said that it dos not hurt to try. Will let you know the results in a few days.

Well unfortunatly Ambien did not work like I had hoped. It did what was made to do, my wife passed out. At least she got a good night sleep. Oh well atleast we tried.

O Tim, i'm sorry this wasn't the med for her. As u said, at least she got a night's sleep, but that isn't the long term answer. Keep at it and don't stop pushing u'r doc for this fix to this. My mother in law had awful sleeping probs for years. She was told to try meletonin. It's a natural supplement that is already produced in u'r body, but when u have less than u need u aren't sleepy enuf to get to sleep. Be sure to check with u'r doc on this tho before trying it. Even over the counter drugs and natural supplements should be cleared by u'r doc when given in conjunction with prescription meds. Take care friend and let u'r sweet wife know we are here thinking of her.

Hello my name is Heather.
I will say one thing about Melatonin. It will only work is when your melatonin levels are low. They will not work until then. They do make a 10mg chewable one now. As far as the Ambien goes, I am not a big fan of that drug. It makes people do irrational things they are not aware off. No I am not a doctor. But I tell you I think at times I know more than they do. I don't just sit by and listen to what a doctor tells me. I study them and research them as much as they do me. If there is a certain prescription I want to try, I will go home and do a 7 page report on it and take it into my primary and tell him.

I think what helps me in some cases is I study Psychology. So when I ask a question to my doctor, I pretty much know what his answer will be, or what he will ask me next, so I already have my answer ready. I will not let them think just because they went to school for 7-8 years and another 4 to be a specialist that they are smarter than me. All I am saying is, if you do not agree with what your doctor is putting you or a loved one on, do your own research. Then make an appointment and tell them you want to discuss your medication changes. As long as you do your homework, it shows the doctor you know what you are talking about and you can pretty much get what you want.
