Lost all feeling in hands during MRI

I had my MRI this morning, and prior to injection of dye I lost all feeling in both of my hands.  I could only move 2 fingers on my right hand.  But even though they were numb and I could not move them, they hurt like heck.  Can you believe I said heck?  I got back total feeling and movement about 10 minutes after the procedure was over.  It really scared me at the time, but they did not seem too concerned at the hospital.  I hope this was due to the way I was laying in the tube, and not a sign of a new lesion.  I will mention this to my neuro at my appointment on Tuesday.  He will probably hit my nerves in my wrist (which also hurts) and then pat my back. rolleyes

That sounds miserable.  I am sorry!  I am sure that was very uncomfortable and scary.  The cavalier attitude of the hospital staff must have been irritating as well.  It does seem like you are lying some how "funny" since it all came back after you came out of the tube.  How long was your MRI?  If it was brain, neck, and back then I can imagine you were in there for quite some time.  That table is really hard.  That could be the reason your hands fell asleep so hard.  Can you see that I am trying to think of any explanation besides a new lesion (crossing my fingers for you)?  Let us know what the neuro says.  I would have to hit him if he patted me!!!!

I agree with Gretchen. It sounds more like u were laying funny or somehow in a 'bind' in that position. I suspect if it was due to a new lesion then it'd not have come back so quickly. Hang in there friend. Let us know how that mri comes out.

Hi Barb,

Ugh, I’m so sorry you had that experience…that does not sound like fun at all! Yes, hopefully you were just stuck in a bad position for too long, and that is what caused the numbness. Please let us know how things go at your neuro appt. I know this is a big one, and you have to deal with “The Back Patter.” I am really hoping that a little back patting is the worst part of the experience for you, and will be sending good thoughts your way on Tuesday.

Thanks everyone! The MRI was just of my brain and brain stem. I suppose I should ask him why he does not have my back done too, since we know that I have at least one lesion there. I cannot imagine having all of it done at one time. I will let you all know about the results. Maybe I will chat with you before then.

Dear Barb

 

...coincidentily, I saw a t.v. commercial this afternoon from radiology group  (I live in Detroit MI area)that showed their new MRI machines with wide openings to cut down on claustriphobic feelings.

 

I remember my first MRI 20 years ago, and read brocure before appt., and it said shots were available if you were claustrofobic.

 

It was tight qand loud...but I pulled through.

..and even said how their machines could handle someone who weighed 500 lbs.
