Hello, I am new to this board. I belong to a few other boards here because of multiple conditions unfortunatly.

I was diagnosed with MS a few weeks ago and am having a very tough time. I have had a new symptom pop up the last few days and was wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen.

I am having trouble swallowing. When I swallow, it almost feels like there is something blocking what I want to swallow. Then when I do get it down sometimes it gets stuck.

I do not have a sore throat, or haven't been sick(cold, flu, ect..)

I wondered if anyone has ever had this happen, and what causes it. I looked it up in some paperwork I have, but could not find it anywhere. Thanks in advance, and I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Hey Christine

Welcome to the board. I"m so sorry for u'r recent diagnosis, esp added to u'r other health issues. Yes, swallowing problems are a symptom of MS. It's called Dysphagia. I'm including a link to the National MS Society. U may want to browse this site for other helpful information as well. Welcome to the board, wicks2. Please let your doctor know of this problem. It needs to be addressed. You may need physical therapy. Please be very careful until you have this resolved!!! Please feel free to post often and ask as many questions as you need.

Welcome wicks! You do need to be careful. Dicuss this symptom with your neuro. I have read that drinikng something cold as you eat has helped some people with this problem.

Hi Christine,

I have had this combined with choking, often choking on my own saliva. I found Reiki to throat really helped a lot though now I have trouble projecting my voice especially when I am tired. I reckon that I have a lesion in some area that affects the throat. It comes and goes (for me anyway).

Hello:

 

@ Three years ago, my wife observed to my neuro that every time I would take a bite of food, I would cough.

 

He sent me for a swallow test....and they suggested eating a small amount of applesauce before eating...to prepare the  throat for more food,,,

 

It works for me....Great luck.   John

Christine sorry that your having the issue with swallowing. I have some swallowing issues, but I have not been dx with MS. I try not to panic and relax. I was told that I have some leakage when swallowing liquids..(but what caused that?) that is what I don't know. Can I please asked how was your dx confirmed for MS?

I was diagnosed with ms a few weeks ago also. Over the past week I've developed new symptoms. Can't feel my feet and various other parts of my body. Doc said if it gets worse I should go to er and get iv steroids for 3 days and then some. What is going on here? when do you really need to go to er and get steroids? Anyone have any experience with this?

Welcome to the board. I"mso sorry for u'r recent dx. I know this is frightening and u just don't know what to think. Hang in there friend. If u'r having numbness that interferes wiht u'r daily life. If it's getting worse...get to the ER. Steroids can be hard on u'r body and aren't an overnight fix, but they do often help things to get better sooner. Going on steroids isn't a snap decision due to the effects it can have on u, but if u feel things are getting worse do go to the ER and get started on them. Be sure to continue to keep u'r doc informed on what's going on. Any new symptoms should also be reported and noted on u'r record. Hang on friend. This is scary and so much is unknown, but u will be ok in the end. Give u'rself time to get u'r head around this and to get this flare under control as well. Please continue to post and let us know how u'r doing. We have live chats on Monday nights and would love to have u join us. It's a great way to get to know each other and to get some real time answers to u'r questions. Again, welcome to the board.

I haven't been dx'd and im only just now starting to seek an answer but I have the sensation when I swalow sometimes that something it stuck there even if it's just swallowing saliva is this what you are referring to?

I do not really know its complicated, usually I am too busy coughing & choking to analyse it much. It just feels like there is something stuck which won't clear. Particularly bad if I eat nuts and choke on a little bit. Perhaps Johns suggestion of a spoon of applesauce will help, I am going to try. :-)

Now don't quote me on this..... I heard opiate painkillers can also create Dysphagia.

Hi Again, This is my second post & it`s my very 1st hour.lol. I Too have Trouble Swollowing & Chocking. I Just take a Drink & Try Not to Panic & take smaller bites & even more Carefully. My throt seems to Tighten Up. I also get Hourse & start losing my voice & have trouble with volum. I had a Dr. tell me MS DOES NOT Cause Pain & that I Was Drug Seeking. It`s so Frustrating... I`ve been in the hospital Many Times Before & After dx because of pain,infections,Blood Presser,Tumor. Anyone else ? Have a Great Night Everyone.Glad I Found this Site. Take Care & Be Safe. I posted earlier on this thread, but decided to come now and give some info on myself. I too have lots of probs swallowing. The food seems to get stuck in my throat and no amt of liquids will make it go down. It's not about eating too fast or too big of a bite...it's just going to happen when it happens. Sometimes it's liquids that don't seem to want to go down, but very seldom. I DON"T have ms, but can relate to what u'r going thru. And....ms DOES include pain! Volume control can be a symptom of ms as well as the choking. The hoarsness is also a possible symptom of ms but can also come from the food scratching u'r throat as it goes down. Hi Again, Wow my 3rd post so far tonight. Is there a Place on here for me to put my Interests,Occupations,Ect? I have already started to feel a Bit Better & gotten a Tip ot 2. This site seems to Have it All And Everyone Seems very Friendly! Can I be in other sites here or do I have to register again? I also have Fibromyalgia & Degenerative Disc Disease. I too have problems with volume, worst when I am lying down (in morning so its not fatigue). Dont let anyone tell you that MS is not painful, I have read that more than 59% have pain, Personally I have had numerous pains the last 12 years with it continually escalating. It reached a stage last year where I did not know how I would continue. Neuros said they could not help me (we do not have pain drs here) finally went to pain clinic at hospital and they put in pain pump & NO more pain, NONE. So know there is help out there and you do not need to suffer. Happy New Year. Love & Light smilewinkgrin

I, too, have swallowing diffulculties and I choke a lot, like you guys have said, even if it's just when I am swalloing to be swallowing! Drives my wife crazy but I don't want to tell her that it also isn't a thrill for me! I even have problems talking a lot because I confuse my words and they get jumbled and come out wrong! It's bad for me because I am a Safety Instructor at a DOE Site here in SE Idaho! It's a good thing that most of the students I have are well aware of my MS and they are very good to me! That's a blessing that's for sure! Well, I had better get something done even if it's not the right thing that needs to be done!   nono At least my boss will see that I was doing something instead of goofing off! yeah   Stay safe my friends!
