Is Costochondritis the same as the MS hug?

I was dx with costochondritis prior t ms dx three years ago. It is just on my left side. Some days are worse than others, but it has never completely gone away. I think in my case it is the hug. Regardless, it is uncomfortable and painful.

I am glad you brought this up and hope others will respond. Its my WORST symptom, and most painful. I have had this for many many years. IT squeezes so hard it takes my breath away.

Use Methocarbamol a type of muscle relaxant that does not  make me so drowsy.

along with Ibruprofin

What do you do?

My impression has been that the MS hug is caused by muscle spasms in the tiny muscles attached to the ribs, whereas costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that connect the ribs to the breastbone. So costochondritis will cause pain in the front and center, but the MS hug can cause pain all over the place in your torso....as low as the waist and as high as the upper chest. Both of them can interfere with breathing.

Well then I believe its the MS hug.. whatever we "call" per my orthopedic doc, it is disabling and HURTS!!

Yes, they both do hurt!! I'm so sorry that you've had such a difficult time, Jan! Are you able to take any pain medications for it besides Ibuprofen?

Yes I take Methocarbamol WITH Ibruprofin..it helps

I mean I can be walking along when suddenly it squeezes so hard it literally takes my breath away. So I asked recently my orthopedic doc and he said MS hug is a generic term...not a medical term. He said he would treat it with steroids if it continues more than a day or so. Hmmm..just had massive steroids and when it was all done.. yup...there was the HUG~!

Sometimes it starts in the back.. or one side..but believe me it goes all around and squeezes.

cry I feel blue. Not sad!!! but without breath. Today whatever this tight band, squeeze, awful pain on my right side or middle abdomen is driving me crazy. It has been with me almost everyday since last July 2009. I take Bacoflen for it. No real help there!!! any other ideas of how to alliviate this awful, annoying symptom?

One more thing, the band is all around front and back. It feels benumbed also, it really scares me. My doctor call it the MS Hug. I was diagnosed with probable MS. The Hug is my most recent new symptom

Apparently, the "hug" is caused by a lesion on our spine. I've had it for many years and it gets worse during the heat and when I get stressed. I've tried Baclofen, Neurontin, Lyrica, Zanaflex (Tizanidine), Tramadol, Solumedrol and Prenisone, and nothing has worked:( I have a prescription for Methocarbamol and I'm hopeful from reading past posts that it might work. God willing.
