A few random thoughts...
Something is considered a "symptom" of MS if it lasts for at least 24 hours (not separated by a 24 hour period). Separate attacks, at least 24 hours apart, is different .. that would be something new, a new or different symptom, not a continuation of problems.
His symptoms...I hate to say this as I don't want to cause controversy (you might have missed a small period of ugliness here) ..but indeed, if he is an outdoors sort of person, has he considered that he has Lyme disease? His symptoms sound a lot like what my husband experienced when he had Lyme, a couple of years ago. A doctor should be able to determine this through blood tests
(and yes, before the Lymies get all hot-and-bothered, I KNOW that Lyme tests aren't all that accurate, but if the guy has been sick this long, maybe they will be; my husband's were...)
and if it is Lyme, a course or two of heavy-duty antibiotics, taken over at least one month, or longer (my husband had them for 10 weeks), and it should be OK.
The burning itching eyes aren't real typical of MS..but could indicate some problems with thyroid..which also could explain some of the other problems he's experiencing.
An MRI can change from time to time, and if he gets another one in a year or so, it may...or may not...show up some problems. (It might not be neurological in nature, whatever is ailing him. Might not be something that shows up on an MRI!, but if he's not pursuing it with a doctor, who knows??)
I'm sorry he quit his job..and lost the medical coverage. Depending on what state you live in, there may be some medical care for indigent people that he'd be eligible for.
