I am still in diagnostic limbo land... 5 lesions on the MRI...Had evoked potential friday but havent gotten results yet. LP next week...My right hand KILLS.... Been numb and painful for 3 months.... I am a lawyer...Type a lot for my job...Had to type some letters today nd it hurts SO bad... Shows no signs of going away and its my rightb hand and im right handed.. WHat if it stays like this?? WHat do I do?? Its AWFUL!!!! :-(

I'm sorry to hear u'r enduring such pain in u'r hand. It does sound like it could be spastisicity (sp). Others here are on such meds as Bacflocen to help with that. I'd certainly call the neuro/doc and let them know. They should be able to offer some relief or at the very least document it. I hope u get some relief soon and can get back to the business of u'r work. Take care and let us know how u'r doing and the results of that lp and evoked pots. tests. In the meantime, in case u don't get enuf relief to satisfy the needs of u'r job, have u ever used anything to help with the typing such as a dictation type software product? I've used Dragon Naturally Speaking and it's great, but there are many others that are also wonderful. Best wishes on this.

Hi there,

The first thing to do is figure out the cause of your hand problem. Do you have a lesion in your cervical spinal cord in such a location that would suggest that this is the cause of your hand numbness/pain?

Alternatively, it is hazardous to blame every symptom on multiple sclerosis. Is the pain/numbness primarily in your thumb, index, and middle fingers? If that's the case, it may be carpal tunnel syndrome and the treatment would be different than for something caused by MS. It's common in people who type a lot.

Either case, your doc should be able to provide some insight and something for symptomatic relief until you get an official diagnosis. You may want to talk to a physical or occupational therapist that may help you find some modifications you can make to your workplace and the way you do things that will help.

I'm sorry you're going through this and hope you get better soon.

I can relate to having trouble with your right hand.  Mine also has been numb for about 3 months, it's also uncoordinated.. it drives me crazy.  I am very lucky in that there is no pain, it just aches if I've overdone it.  My left hand was numb a few months before, and I must say that was much more tolerable.  I don't know about you, but I'm sure learning to use my left hand now yeah

Hi,

I have already been tested for carpal tunnel, arthritis etc...Have had 2 EMG's both negative...In fact, atfirst the docs thought it WAS carpal tunnel. When the EMG's were negative they decided to do further tests. I had an MRI of the cervical spine and brachial plexus which was fine. ANd then to the brain MRI where they found 5 lesions... I dont know whether the lesions could be causing this...SOMETHING has to be and they have no clue what... after a neurological examination I have also found out I have a "mute right toe.." I guess that means it showed the "babinski sign." All the stuff is on my right. I also get right leg cramps and toe pain. But my hand is by far the most significant... I will look into that software...

Confused gal,
Have u had a seizure prior to this onset :CT Scanning and MRI imaging or angiography. These may show structural lesions within the brain, but the majority of those with epilepsy rather than that of partial or focal onset seizures show nothing unusual. The lesions could possibly be either from mild strokes that u may have not even noticed the onset of, or AVM's will also cause lesions . These lesions locations, did the doctor explain the affected area of the body?

I'm no doctor, just a nursing student with many resourceful books.
