Hey, I wanted to ask a question, How would you tell if you had hearing impairment, I know this is a stupid question to ask but it seems my hearing has worsened very mildly, i can still hear all everything clear, but it just seems different, Maybe its me just getting paranoid...

NOT a stupid question! When it comes to MS, I don't know that there is such a thing as a stupid question.

I experienced some mild hearing loss a few months back. I had a hard time telling if I was really having a hard time hearing or not. Like you say, its hard to tell because you can still hear everything...there is just something different. It was only in one ear for me, and I figured it out one day when I was talking on my cell phone. I thought "wow, my phone is crap!!" because it was all muffled. Then I switched ears and it was clear as a bell. Fortunately for me, it was only temporary.

I have read about hearing loss and MS before, so I don't think you're getting paranoid. Maybe try the cell phone test! :) And you can always talk to your doctor if your hearing loss becomes more bothersome.

    No not a stupid question at all :-) While hearing loss can occur in MS, it's considered more common to have it associated with some other issue.  I don't know if this will help, but I get yearly hearing exams and some questions they ask me are: are you asking people to repeat themselves? turning up the volume on the tv/radio?  any buzzing or ringing? 

 

    My husband doesn't have hearing loss exactly.  He can hear a one on one conversation just fine, but in a group setting with a lot of people talking he has trouble hearing anything specific.  His neuro explained it as background noise and having problems processing too much info at once.

 

   I hope it gets better for you.

I have been losing my hearing lately as well... I started a new medication called Diamox and I thought it was due to that. I started getting that "muffled" hearing in my left ear along with a constant ringing noise. I found out that the medication causes ringing in the ears, so I stopped taking it. It's now been about 3 weeks since I stopped the medication, but I still have the ear problems! Now that I've found someone else who has similar problems, maybe it is the MS.

During a normal conversation face to face, I hear fine... but on the phone, it sounds very muffled with my left ear but my right ear is perfectly fine.

I'm just as confused as you are.

I don't have hearing loss as such. But I certainly have hearing issues......my volume control seems to be out of whack. I have trouble in rooms with a lot of different noises going on (like Kimber said), some of the noises seem too loud, and others too quiet????? Very strange! I find that I get quite flustered if there are too many sounds going on....feel like a freak!!

Is your "muffled" issue constant, or does it come and go??

I have the same issues as Kas, I think. My husband says I talk too loud in public, but then when I am home, I think I'm talking perfectly normal and he says I'm not talking loud enough. My kids agree, so my volume tuning is a tad off as well. When I take the annual hearing test at work though, everything seems to come back normal, eventhough I don't hear most of the tones, I guess I still hit within the 'normal range'. To tell you the truth, I think I'm normal and THEY are OFF! :o)

I also get very confused and can't concentrate in large groups of people talking. This is very hard when I am in class or at work trying to brainstorm with classmates or my peers and I'm becoming more distant from the conversations because of it. Not good for my grades OR the perception I give at work.

I know you were directing your question to Anthony but I was curious... why do you ask? My "muffled hearing" is constantly. Do you have a suggestion?

Hi drama,

no suggestion sorry, I was just interested. I find that most of my "MS type" symptoms are quite sporadic (sp?), so was wondering.

Still not DX'd but I cant' say that I have hearing loss, but I can relate to the loud. crowded setting. I find myself "reading lips" to get a grasp on a one on one conversation where there is a lot of background noise. Everyone else seems to hear fine, except me. Sometimes I just nod or laugh, but then I wonder if it was something that I should be laughing at. very frustrating. I also have ringing in my ears a lot and recently out of the blue, lost hearing in my right ear for a few minutes and then it came back.
reading lips is not always fun as I feel self conscious that I am staring at someone's mouth.

Hey Everyone

Just wanted to jump in here and agree with many of u on the crowded areas issues. I have the same probs...too much noise or convo's at one time and i'm lost. Hard to focus or maintain a convo like that. Also, too many people in one place with me is just too much...chaos. I feel the need to back out and just get someplace else. We have this thing at my church every Sunday morn...we all get up and greet each other in the middle of the isle. It's reall hard. Some mornings i can do it ok, most morns not. I find myself holding onto the edge of the pew to keep my balance sometimes. It's like i lose my place...positioning? The crowd it'self is the prob there tho. The noise for me is increased if anything. I havne't noticed any hearing loss, but things just seem louder and then it's irritating because i can't focus on anything..just want to stop it all. Make sense?
