I've recently been in touch with a woman who has MS and she has vulvar pain, itching, burning.  She also has burning with urination.  Is this a symptom of MS or could it be a non related issue?

I am from the Lyme forum and have Vulvar pain, too, and it's a known Lyme Symptom and I know Lyme and MS share many symptoms.

Just trying to help a new "friend"

Any advice would be appreciated!

Those are pretty typical signs of a bladder infection.  Has she been to the doctor to be tested?  Untreated bladder infections can lead to kidney infections and long-term problems. She should be checked right away.

Vulvar pain, itching and burning are not "known MS symptoms", but bladder infections can easily happen with folks with MS if their bladder doesn't function properly.

Tbanks for the response. She has been to several GP's, a couple OB/GYNs and a neurologist - they can't figure it out.

Could it be an allergy, or a sensitivity to some laundry product, or feminine hygiene product she is using?  Sometimes you can use something for a long time, then develop a sensitivity to it. Or if there is something new?

I have not had pain down there but I did have a ton of numbness and tingling and the neuro said it was normal. To give you an idea how numb I gave birth to my daughter and came home and tore all my stitches and did not notice for about a week till some of my feeling came back! HTH!

Tkelly:  At first I thought you were going to say you gave birth with no pain!  Yikes - not feeling ripped out stitches - I hope you healed up OK. 

Uppity:  That's usually one of my first questions - I can't believe I didn't ask her.  I will do that.  Even if that's not what is actually causing it - it could certainly make the situation worse (I speak from experience, unfortunately - I now use unscented everything).  Thanks so much for the second post.

The other thing that comes to mind...is she sexually active? If so, she should talk with her partner..who may be using some products (condoms, lotions, powder, ...uh..sexual aides... that she's allergic or sensitive to.)
