Pregnancy & Avonex ??

First of all, congrats to your aunt! Has your aunt discussed this early exposure with her neuro? Another place to try would be the support people for avonex…she should have a number to call when she has questions about her med.

 

It looks like avonex is a pregnancy category C drug, which basically means they haven’t really studied the risks. You might try googling “avonex in early pregnancy,” or something like that. When I poked around a bit using the search terms above, I found reference to an observational clinical trial studying exposure in pregnancy. It’s not yet complete though. I have asked this of my neuro just recently. They don't know a lot about avonex and babies. He thinks it is safe while pregnant. The thing that avonex can do is cause a miscarriage in early pregnancy. So if you don't lose the baby early on they have seen no real harm to the fetus. It only stays in your system for a week and then it is gone. Interferon is somehting we produce normally. I think stopping is the right thing and I think that if she carries on the way she is the baby will be fine. Just stop taking all meds and get on prenatals and she should be fine.
