flexeril vrs baclofen

I am taking flexeril and it gives me really dry mouth and causes constipation.  I always have an issue with the constipation anyway but have had to start taking stool softeners to counter act all the meds.  Dry mouth is one of the side effects of flexeril.  I checked on other muscle relaxers and baclofen doesn't list dry mouth as a side effect.  Can anyone give some info on the baclofen and how it works for everyone?  Is it pretty much the same thing as flexeril?  I don't have terrible spasms, just the occasional toe or leg cramp going on.  The muscle relaxer seems to help with my leg pain, when they just ache so bad especially as the day wears on.  Any input would be appreciated.

just began baclofen, 10mg at bedtime only. no dry mouth plus cramping toes are gone. definitely works, but can make you a bit drowsy. as i say, just began it. linda

thanks linda for the reply.  I have a call in to my doctor.  I have the numbness/tingle sensation in my tongue and lips which moves to my upper mouth so dry mouth doesn't help those symptoms when they come up.  Thanks again and glad the baclofen is working for you.

Baclofen is supposed to be designed to work directly on your spinal cord as a muscle relaxer.  Most say that the drowsy headed thing is short lived.  It is supposed be an excellent choice for long term use.  I hope it works for you!!!

I use it as needed and I like it.

Let us know what he says.  Keep us posted as to how you are feeling.  By the way, I tried flexeril.  I wasn't on it long due to the fact that it did not work for me.  I would have been super unhappy about the constipation!!!  I deal with that constantly anyway.

Hey Gretchen,

I got a call from the doctors nurse and they said they are calling in the baclofen 10mg and I can take 1/2 if I want since I have such a sensitivity to meds.  They also told me the results of a repeat brain MRI which was no new lesions and nothing active and the first thoracic MRI results which was 1 very old lesion at T9.  They said it was inactive and had been there a long time.  That would explain my rib tightness over a course of the last 6 years that no one could explain.  I will keep you posted on how the baclofen works for me.  Thanks again for all the support from everyone.

Hey Cindy, that’s great! I am really sensitive to meds too, and started out cutting my baclofen in half as well. I initially had problems with baclofen heightening my vertigo, but after I took it at night for a while that went away.  I can now take the full dose during the day (lately it's been twice a day), with no side effects at all. I hope it helps you…let us know.
