I'm a 62 year old female and have lupus and fibromyalgia. I came to this site because I've been falling down quite a bit and have started having trouble swallowing my saliva. Interesting, though, is that I never connected nerve pain with MS. (I doubt that I have MS, but am trying to figure out what these many mysterious symptoms mean) I have intermittent nerve pain in my upper left arm that has been so severe as to send me to the ER. A bone scan was negative and my PCP and rheumatologist don't have an answer. When it gets bad, I use patches to control the pain. I take Cymbalta (90 mg), Neurontin (1200 mg) and Norco for other issues but they don't control the nerve pain.

Any ideas or comments?

Hi Patty,

I have nerve pain in the evenings. I don't tend to wake with it. I hate Norco......it makes me sick to my stomach. I tend to just deal with it. On really bad nights, I take Klonopin and for some reason that takes the edge off for me.

I have a friend who has some success from taking the supplement spirulina everyday.

I'm sorry you are having a tough time with this. Nerve pain can be notoriously hard to treat! You should see a neurologist about the falling and the swallowing issues.

Gretchen, I also have the worst nerve pain at night when I go to bed. It sometimes wakes me up and when it gets that bad, I use lidocane patches. They really help. Do you know what causes your nerve pain?

I assume it's from my MS. Upon diagnosis I didn't have nerve pain. After a particularly bad flare in which I was numb from my ribs down, I developed nerve pain. This particular flare added a decent sized lesion to my spinal cord. I have had nerve pain ever since. I get it in my lower legs and feet. It starts as an icy-hot feeling then progresses to an intense burning and then it may even get to a feeling like my skin is being peeled off with a carrot peeler. If I take klonopin at the burning stage, I can usually get the pain to settle back to the icy-hot stage. I usually get the icy-hot sensation every night but it doesn't always get worse.

I hope this helps. If you suspect MS, make an appointment with an MS specialist. Good luck and I hope you find relief soon! Nerve pain is tricky.

I have bad nerve pain and stiffness in my legs. Do you have any side effects with the lidocaine patches? I am not tolerating any of the medication the give me. It makes me feel sleepy and stoned. Last night they were really bad and I thought about trying the patches. Thx. Stacy
