Im going in for an MRI thats with and without contrast soon and Im feeling iffy about the contrast. Im the type of person that doesnt like to put unecessary meds into my body and if something goes wrong afterwards I get bad anxiety and depression and think "what if I didnt take it?". Ive read the contrast is to just check if lesions are active and makes no difference. Is this true? Do you guys know any info on the contrast? I want to get all the info before i talk to my doc because Ive noticed in most cases doctors are pushy about these types of things

Contrast is flushed out through the kidneys. For this reason drink water before the MRI (not too much for obvious reasons) and drink a lot of water after the MRIs. If you do this the contrast is out of your system after the second time you urinate.

The whole set of MRIs ordered will initially be done without contrast. After those they will inject the contrast, put you back in, take the MRIs, and you're done. The contrast MRIs are done much quicker than the ones without. The contrast will not show anything that the non-contrast MRIs show. Contrast allows, in MS, to show active lesions.

My suggestion: Do the MRIs as ordered for the most comprehensive scans/report.

I agree with Snoopy. You should do the contrasting agent. If you don't, and you find no answers, I suspect your anxiety will still kick in. "I should have done the contrast. That MRI didn't show what's really there."

Drink lots of water following the procedure. Best of luck. Keep us posted.
