Optic Neuritis both eyes?

Hey guys. I went to the eye doc for the second time in 3 weeks with eye pain. 1st trip i had 20/20 vision, but pain in my right eye with movement, color blindness in the right eye, and some loss of peripheral vision in the right eye. However my optic nerves were not inflamed. They got me a referral to a neuro ophthalmologist for the 22nd.

I had started to feel better other than some sensitivity to light. But yesterday, I really started having light sensitivity in both eyes, then the pain got worse throughout the day. I talked to a friend who is an optometrist and she told me to go back to the ophthalmologist. I had to go to a different doctor since I'm out of town. He was an MD/ophthalmologist. I made the appointment and saw him today.

He said my vision was 20/40 and 20/40 -2. He also said that I don't really have noticeable swelling of the optic nerves, but i do have macular edema and with my other symptoms, he's pretty confident it is ON. He also said he believes i "definitely have some type of neuro inflammatory disease." He put me on steroids.

Have any of you experienced ON without the optic nerve showing obvious inflammation? Have any of you had ON in both eyes at the same time?

Hi Jesimae,
I’m sorry to hear you’re experiensing eye issues. Optic nerve inflammation doesn’t always show upon visual examination. There is section that isn’t visible except via MRI. You may want to see that neuro-opthalmalogist as soon as you can. Perhaps call and see if they can get you on the cancellation list. You may also want to see a neurologist.

I have had ON. I only had it in one eye. I hope things get better real soon! Keep me posted.

You may want to consider a fluorescein scan from an eye doctor who has experience with occular inflammation.

I assume the eye doctor used a slit lamp to confirm the inflammation.


Steroids are usually the first step to control inflammation quickly

After a medrol dose pack, I went back to the eye doctor. My vision has returned. Light sensitivity is gone. He said that steroids would cause my vision to return to normal each time if I had this again. I have an MRI scheduled for the 7th. They referred me to a neurologist but the first available appointment is in September. So, I wait... rolleyes
