Hello. I am 26 and am currently undergoing testing for MS. I had MRIs done last year and showed no lesions. My symptoms have gotten worse and the Dr informed me last week that she believes I do have MS. I am repeating th MRIs this week along with a spinal tap.

My symptoms are rather varied. I have had severe vertigo(lasts days at a time) for a year. I was diagnosed with Nystagmus in the eyes. My legs tingle and occasionaly feel numb. I have some other symptoms as well.

At first, I didn not think it was possible for me to have MS. Now I am just worried sick about it.

My Dr said that the MRIs can appear "normal" even if you have MS. Does anyone know of other tests or questions I should ask? I want to make sure that I get the right diagnosis.

Hi Ahmom,

 

    Good for you for wanting to find the right answer!  It can sometimes be difficult, especially if tests come back normal.  Your doctor is correct though, sometimes the MRI's do come back normal in the early stages of MS.  Did you have just a brain MRI? or was a spinal MRI done as well?  Sometimes the spine might show something that the brain MRI won't.  You can also ask about evoked potentials tests which test how fast signals get from the brain to the rest of the body. 

 

    Nystagmus is a common symptoms of MS, but it is also seen in other illnesses too like Meniere's disease and fibromyalgia.  Have you ever had your magnesium levels checked?

I see you are scheduled for a spinal tap?  That might help the doctor narrow the focus as to what is wrong with you as well.  And since it's been a year since your last MRI, perhaps the new one will show something as well.  Good luck to you. Do come back and let us know the results.
