Back a long time ago when I was diagnosed with MS...and before all the new treatments...I was injected with ACTH -- acthar. Here is some information from the National MS Society:
http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Meds-ACTH.asp
It has a lot of side effects -- but at the time, it was the only drug available, and it did indeed benefit me. I was almost totally paralyzed at the time (and in the hospital) suffering from a serious exacerbation, and within 24 hours of the first injection, I started to recover. I used it several times after that, over the first 10 years or so....and then Betaseron came along, I went on that, and haven't needed any serious intervention since.
I'd certainly consider it again, if I needed it. If you go to the drug company site, they do offer some assistance to either convince your insurance company to pay for it, or a subsidy if they can't do that, so you might want to put acthar into Google, get to the company web site, and look down the left hand side for "reimbursement program", if you're interested.
