Hi everyone!
I too have problems with spasticity in my calves. I saw the physiotherapist at my MS clinic and she gave me a good handout I thought I'd share... this has really made my pain manageable, especially during sleep! I always have a pillow under my legs and it really does help.
I wish I could post the pics of the stretches, but I'm sure the web will have a ton if you're interested.
"Positioning -
Legs that are stiff tend to straighten. This is not always under one's own control. If possible, try and rest in a position that allows the legs to relax ie: with the hips and knees slightly bent, supported by a couple of pillows or a knee bolster. If resting on your side, place a pillow between your knees.
Resting on your back with the legs straight can cause stress on the lumbar spine as well as increasing stiffness.
Stretching -
Stretching not only maintains the length and elasticity of the muscles but of the soft tissues around the joints. There are tiny receptors in the muscles and tendons that monitor the tension and length of the muscle. These receptors can talk to other receptors in the spinal cord which can cause the muscle to relax. Not only is it important to stretch the affected muscles but to hold the stretch for twenty to thirty seconds. Always avoid jerky movements; this can damage the muscle and cause it to tighten.
