Hi Felicia,
You wouldn't be normal if you were not nervous. We all were.
Questions to ask: Does he have a history of doing this surgery. You don't want to be on anyones learning curve. Will it be total colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis. Laparascopic vs open.
Days typically in hospital.
Things for you to know: You are going to have several rough days. However, they will do everything to help you. ie pain pump. Just know the more narcotics you take, the slower your gut will recover.
Even if it hurts, you must get out of bed as soon as they say. It will hurt but will stimultae things to get back on track. I used the pain pump, waited a minute and then got up. Give yourself a break and don't expect to be running 5 days after surgery. Be a bit of a couch potato. Keep thinking about how much things will be better within 2 - 4 weeks. It is a small sacrifice after years of suffering.
Before surgery: Prepare your home before surgery. Clean, make food and freeze for other family members, stock the pantry and remember to get plenty of soft toilet paper. Get books that you have wanted to read or magazines.
Remember you are not alone. This board is a tremendous support system..Come back often.
Phyllis
PS: There have been other posts here that stated their fibromyalgia symptoms improved after surgery..keep thinking of possible added benefits
