Do low stress, fun jobs exist?

I've worked as a Church Receptionist for 10 years and recently lost my job due to the church splitting. So, I'm looking for a job that is fun and not very stressful, and I need some ideas. I have a degree in Marketing and worked in Public Relations before working as a Receptionist.

i never heard of a church splitting, i didn't even know that was something that happened.
Anyway, i also thought being a grocery store cahsier was fun. It doesn't pay much but slinging groceries is mindless and pretty easy. You just have to learn to ignore the crazy people

Government jobs are somewhat stress free compared to the private sector...but are very hard to get. I work for the state. Based on your situation/background, where I work, we have several public relations departments and their duties are varied and your guaranteed never to be bored. You may have a few days that are somewhat stressful followed by several non-stressful days...you will have to work. You usually can generally dictate your career path. The only major stress you'll have to face is learning and accepting "the system" for what it is, and where I work, the PR office is somewhat political. It is almost impossible to get fired unless you do something really really stupid, make the news for something negative, or upset someone higher than your boss or their boss.

They generally have great benefits, start with 2 weeks vacation and goes up a week after every 5 years of service, 2 weeks of sick leave/per year (which you can bank and cash out at retirement or separation), 4 personal days/per year, 10 paid holidays. All union positions are paid overtime at 1.5x their rate. Working for free is illegal, unlike in the private sector, where somehow 40 hour weeks mean working 50 or 60 and getting paid for 40 hours. They generally have excellent healthcare and disability benefits. They don't pay a dime into social security, so retirement is almost guaranteed. They usually have their own independently funded retirement system and a 457 plan (similar to a 401K plan). Also, everyone knows what their co-workers are paid...no wage disparity for the same classification. You know your yearly raises (step/grade) increases and when it will be maxed out when your hired. You'll also know your annual cost of living increase usually every 3 years (based on the term of the union contracts).

It's also one of those rare occupations where you can work a full 30 years without fear of losing/changing your job. However, make sure ahead of time they are funded with tax money dictated by federal/state law and not based on grants or special "funds." Otherwise your job isn't that secure and you can be laid off during slow times or even let go after political party changes every 4 or 8 years. It's amazing how many different government careers are available and their available job postings/descriptions/salaries are posted on their respective websites by law. I'm sure you can find something that you'll enjoy if you look for them.

I've been at my job for almost 10 years and enjoy every day that I go there. Ironically, several other people there hate their job and treat it like a prison sentence (counting down their days to retirement)...so I guess attitude goes a long way also. Also, many of them never had to work in the private sector, so they don't know any better.

I'm so sorry about your job. But, I'm a firm believer in when "God closes one door a window opens somewhere else". I worked in Government (the dreaded IRS) for 10 years and GISGuy31 brings up a lot of good points about working there.

Thanks for asking. I'm working a lot harder than I thought I could (but not too hard!) and I am enjoying every minute of it. We have a very busy tax practice and we are working right up to the deadline. But, I've been doing this for 30 years, prior to getting sick, and, surprisingly, I find I really missed the insanity!

It's been great to take small breaks and check in on my ostomates!

Hi, Last August, I found a fun, exciting and low stress job. I do interactive home cooking parties for Two Sisters Gourmet. I offer a host the choice of 4 different menus. I supply the Two Sisters products for the recipes and the host provides the fresh foods needed. She invites her friends and family and we have a great party! We split into 4 groups and we follow the very easy recipes which takes about 15 minutes or so for each recipe. The company offers delicious dipping sauces, marinades, dips, desserts, and many other awesome products. If you are interested in hearing more about the company, please let me know. I GOT THE JOB!!!!

I know, I'm so excited to be able to eat lunch at the beach. I was willing to take a pay cut to work out there, but they offered me more than what I was asking, plus a raise after 3 months! I was surprised and pleased, because gas is now up to $3.49!
