MIMI - My heart goes out to you!! I'm one of those who suffered with chronic constipation my entire life - from a baby until I was 43 years old. Like you I was lucky IF I had a bowel movement once a month. The ONLY way for me to have a bowel movement was to take laxatives, Ex-Lax was the only one that worked for me. Dulculax was a big NO NO for me due to the severe cramping is caused me. As I eventually found out - laxatives will STOP working eventually. I was taking 48 tabs within a three DAY period, not to mention, precription medications Zelnorm, Amatiza, MiraLAX, and any other you can think of.
On 11-09-06 I had my TC - which gave me a life I never knew existed. The surgeon left in a very minimal amount (VERY MINIMAL) of colon for the sole purpose of keeping things from going straight thru. The small intestine was attached to the rectum, avoiding a bag, so basically the small intestine now does the job of the colon. It can take a year for the body to get accustome to this change and over time the amount of bowel movements one has gets better with time and also the time between meals. For me personally, in the beginning post-op, I was going 8 to 12 times a day. Now I go 1 to 3 times a day, if not, every other day.
I will tell you that this is a HUGE surgery and recovery is different for everyone. Yes, there are risks with even the most minor of surgeries but it's a decision only you can make for yourself. I weighed my options and decided I could not live any longer with the pain, bloating, and in general, being so sick all the time.
What worries me about the surgeon willing to take on your case is the amount of surgeries he has done. But you're in another country and I guess you don't have any other choice. Is there a possibility that you can come to the United States to have the surgery? I was very blessed to have one of the best colorectal surgeons in my area. He has performed hundreds, if not thousands, of this surgery. If I had to make the choice again, I would do in again in a heartbeat.
God bless you sweetie and continue praying. God is so good and He will see you thru!!
BOOKA - My heart goes out to you and your daughter. I'm sorry, but I don't know what the ACE is, so forgive me. For me personally, I've not heard of this surgery being done on someone your daughter's age - but if they would have had the knowledge and technology they have today in my day I'm sure my parents would have opted for it.
I've read somewhere that when they do a "partial" colon resection for CI it usually ends up that a total will eventually need to be done. Hopefully your daughter will not have to have a bag and when they do the resection they will be able to correct the stricture.
Personally I don't think she'll have problems not having bowel movements post-op. There is a possibility that things could slow down eventually, as in my case, but what did not work prior to the TC, i.e. MiraLAX, will get things moving - yet this is not the case for most people. If it would happen the amount of MiraLAX wouldn't be what she's taking now, rather a capfull once a day or every other day. It would be more of a trial and error type thing.
Although I have to take the MiraLAX I still consider my surgery a TOTAL SUCCESS and would do it again in a heartbeat - no question about it.
I don't have any answers regarding the hospital stay or how long she will be in. With it being an open procedure it will take longer than if it were done laparoscopic. Is there a specific reason why the surgeon is choosing open vs laparoscopic?
I wish you all the best and please keep us updated and/or feel free to ask questions. Someone may have more answers to your questions.
