Being Impotent After Surgery??.. Please Help! Many Thanks

Right.. i had to ring up my nurse today for an emergency appointment.. i have an ileostomy but they left the last bit of my large intestine there and its being a nuisance!!

She gave me Prednisolone suppositories and ive got some asacol suppositories..
We was discussing having the surgery to have that last part of my intestine removed.. But she also told me there is a risk of being impotent and not being able to have kids or sex.

Only being 18 years old i am really really distraught and worried.. ive always wanted a family of my own and my own little babies, and everyone loves sex ;) lol..

I wouldnt have minded if i was say 60 years old.. but im not..

Is there anyone who can help me out?! Any experience, knowledge or understanding about this?

Would be greatly appreciated :)

maybe it is different for men. But i had tc 1year ago and there will be no problems if i want to have more children, i already have 4 boys mind you, but i will have another once my health is 100%, and yeh everyone loves sex, but the only way i can see the health getting in the way is if you are in pain before having intercourse!!! sorry if this doen't help

Yeah it does thanks =) every reply helps me... knowing that people are ok or not and what theyve done... its good advice and cheers me up!
Nah im not in hardly any pain.. but the nurse said about i wont be able 2 get erections etc..

Its just if the surgeon damages a nerve when hes sewing the rectal passage up because its on the base of the pelvis..

Wow! I've never heard that before!--maybe b/c I'm not a guy?!? Sorry, to only have the woman's perspective but my sex life is way better now. I hope men write in on this.

My sex life is much better now ive got a bag and tht.. my gf makes me feel really comfortable with everythin :)..
Couldnt imagine being with anyone else tho lol... not that confident.. ;)

Firthy,

First off, I am not a guy, but I can understand why you would be very worried....

The main reason they have to warn you about impotence/etc. is because they are going to be working close to *that* area when they are removing your intestines, so there is always a small chance they could injure something in the private parts while they are working on you....it is very unlikely, I am sure.

With women, there is a chance of being infertile for the same reasons--they might injure an ovary or something, or scar tissue could form around a fallopian tube, pinching it off. Anyway, I suggest you google "percent of men impotent after ileostomy" and see what you get. there are a lot of medical articles out there that could help inform you....I never thought I would ever say this, I but I am so much happier with my ileostomy. I am 27...
