What to do about noise?

I've posted here about my mom in the past.  She has an iliostomy and is complaining of her stoma getting noisier & noisier.  She was to the point of not eating on Saturdays so she could have a quiet Sunday at church.  That no longer helps & it embarrasses her to tears & to the point that she's thinking she won't go to church anymore...my mother NEVER misses church.

Can anyone suggest something that she can do, or needs to get the doctor to do to help her out?

Well usually noise is from gas. She shoulg try to figure out what foods she is eating to stop most of the gas that she's having. When she stop eating it only builds up extra gas. Drinking out of straws also causes a lot of gas. Smoking causes a lot of gas. See when she doesn't eat this is what happens, the gases in her stomach builds up and pushes it right into what ever part of her intestines she have left (sorry to put it like that but there are different types of ostomys and I don't know what kind she has so I'm keeping it as general as possible) so then when ever she eat something the gas passes out first before her out put does and if there is a lot it will make more noise. This might not be her problem but it's a suggestion just the same. Hope it helps.

Sexy is right. Your mum has made the common mistake of thinking that not eating will eliminate the noise. In actual fact, the opposite is true. Not eating causes more gas.

She'll never eliminate gas completely, but the best solution is to try and have something in her tummy at all times.

Can you hear the noise? Oftentimes, ostomates themselves think their stoma is so noisy but others can't hear it at all. The ostomate is right on top of the noise which is why it is so loud to them.

If my stoma is having a noisy day, I just make the excuse that I'm hungry and it's my tummy rumbling. After all, the noise is coming from the front and there is no tell tale odour afterwards :)

Thank you SO much for the info!  I'm going home this weekend (Mom is 80 today  tongue  ).  I'll pass this info along.

To answer the questions...yes, I do hear these noises & they are noticably loud.  (When we're alone, we can laugh about them, but when we're in public, the embarrassment is very painfully written all over her face.)  She's had her ileostomy since May of 97.  She has tried using Beano when she eats, but that doesn't seem to help.  She does occasionally use straws, so I'll bring that to her attention.  She's not a smoker.  :)

i know there have been times when i could have DIED when that happened,,,
and it wouldnt stop!!
i know when i dont eat and am so aware of it ...
it happens.
then when i eat too fats and am in a quite room w/ others, it happens.
cause im basically waiting for it too.
i almost geta hernia trying to cup my place when it starts!:)
anyway, being nervouse sure does make it happen for me.
maybe sucking a hard candy will help.
i dont know.
i am in church alot to, and i can totally relate.

Ralph has been a bit concerned about the noise but my granddaughters, ages 15 and 18 think that it's totally COOL!  Of course, they dearly love their Poppa.  Their are 7 others with either ileostomies or colostomies in our church so we don't worry about it.  It can't be helped at times and God certainly doesn't care so why should we.

God bless all of you, we are still learning (Ralph's sigmoid colostomy was 9/10 after being in the hospital mostly in ICU on emergency since 9/5...he just wasn't getting better on the antibiotics, etc.).  We are very thankful that his severe pain is gone so we can live with a little noise now & then!
