Didn't get out of hospital like I expected

My second surgery to finish my total colectomy and make it permanent went well.  I was set to get out Saturday but by noon I was feeling awful.  We decided it was best for me to stay where they had everything that is needed to take care of me.  The wife and children took the two hour drive back home and by Saturday night I was very sick.  Sick enough they put an NG tube in me, that little medical device is something I could do without the rest of my life. rolleyes   I pulled some of my incisions apart with all the vomiting and of course would you know we had my bag explode right next to the incision that had been tore open some.  Still not sure what all might have happened, blockage, twist, infection or combination but they feel it is now under control so I have started back on full liquid diet and may get moved up to full diet by tonight but I have a "once bitten, twice shy" attitude so if it takes a day or two before I am back to solids than so be it.  Hoping to be out before the weekend, the kids were so bummed and worried since I didn't get out when I was suppose to.  Hope everyone is doing well and I will give updates when I know more.

Oh, that's awful! But lucky you were still in the hosp. when you started feeling punk, eh? That 2 hr. drive BACK to the hospital would've been a booger. (takes off rose-colored glasses now and gets back to normal cynicism).

NG tube..oh oh oh...can't even think about it.

John,

Sorry to hear that you are still in the hospital. I don't think your episode is uncommon tho, unfortunately. I am sooo glad that you were there rather than on the road. Can you even imagine having to make that trip back to the hospital feeling like you did? NG tubes just suck, but they are so necessary. Doesn't make it any more pleasant tho. Hope you are feeling better and let us know how your recovery is going.

OK, more update.  I am still in the hospital but I am staying optimistic.  Had to go back to OR on Saturday morning to have the incisions in rear opened back up and cleaned out due to infection.  That is what is thought to be the origin of my illness, infection in both incision sites.  I guess I could get down about this but in a few weeks it will be over forever, if I still had UC it would be continuing on forever. 

Right now we are at the point that both incisions are getting packed daily, that is not the most fun a person can have but a needed procedure to heal them quickly and permanently.  The surgeon is looking at sending me home on Wednesday so that is good news as long as we all feel we have a good handle on this and can continue treatment at home.

Like I said, I guess I could see this as a bad thing but I like to see this as nothing more then a set back on my road to completely curing my UC.  As long as I spent miserable with UC, little things such as this don't seem all that bad.  I will update if I find out more but hoping to be home Wedesday and starting the rest of my life UC free.
