OKay... I am a coffee ADDICT. To the point where I get bad migraines and irritibility if I don't have atleast 2 cups worth every morning.. and I usually have an afternoon pick-me up, as well. Too much coffee is bad for you, I know. And with the surgery it will probably help alleviate my caffeine/coffee addicition some.. But I still wanna know how long I'm going to have to go without my favorite drink..

I know there are a lot of intolerances after surgery, and I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say mostly everybody can't tolerate coffee soon after surgery.. But to all the others out there that had surgery and love a cup of mojo.. How long did you have to wait post-surgery till you could enjoy some good ole coffee?

I love coffee, too! I remember getting a food tray in the hospital with a cup of coffee on it very soon after surgery, and it tasted so good! I enjoy a couple of cups every morning, too, so you won't have to give that up. smilewinkgrin

Not only is coffee good, it is necessary to get me started every morning! I had coffee in the hospital , too, with no problem. The only thing that does bother me is the fact that coffee stimulates the little stoma almost immediately. Sooo I don't drink the coffee before changing my wafer if I have time. Usually, 2 cups in the morning is what I allow myself. Who would of thought that we could live (well) without a colon??

I know that people get frustrated with how frequently they have to be in the bathroom for awhile after surgery and well.. I know what coffee USED to do for me, so I figured it would just amplify that post-surgery.
I just can't go or function without my coffee.. I don't drink any type of soda or other caffienated beverges so this is my only source of Umph! in the mornings haha

When I had UC, I drank coffee even though it was havoc on my guts. Now, after surgeries, it's sooo much better. I drink it all the time, and I, too, had it the Monday after my friday surgery! (My takedown surgery.)

I love coffee too. I remember my very first thing I had after my surgery when I started liquids was coffee, jello. i love coffee.

Can someone tell me about take down surgery.
I had my colon removed 6 months ago due to c dif. I was seriously ill and not expected to survive -
I was moved to a second hospital where I had a wonderful surgeon . I currently have an ostomy - and I am scheduled to have take down surgery in October.
I know it will never be like it was before since I have a large portion of me missing but can someone who had been through this tell me what it really like. (Don't scare me to death>)

Wow, I'm glad you survived that ordeal. I've heard great things about the j-pouch, and there are several people on here who are very happy with it, like suebear and sfgiantsjo. Hopefully, they will reply to your question soon. You might want to post a new topic, since your question is hidden under the "Coffee" topic.

Man, I'm different from almost all y'all. I was 'off' coffee for months after my colostomy. I just didn't have a taste for it. But now it's back. Took about 3 months tho.

Simmadown - I'm with you. For some reason, right after surgery, coffee smelled good, but tasted bad to me. Guess my taste buds were screwed up a bit.

I drink decaf coffee/lattes now. Caffeine really increases my output. With the milk in it, at least there is some nutritional value to it for me.

See, that was my original assumption.. that the coffee/caffeine would give you an urgency to go like it does most healthy people..

I'm suprised to hear how many people could tolerate coffee post-surgery, especially a day or two after.

It's crazy how this surgery affects so many people so differently.. tongue
