right now i have to get a blood transfusion twice a week my hemaglobin drops to about 6 in between transfusions i was wondering if any of you had this happen and did it stop automatically after the surgery?

i had really bad anemia before surgery. i didnt have to get blood transfusions as often as you do, i guess you're losing a lot more blood than i was. but after surgery all my iron/hemoglobin/RBC levels became normal pretty quickly. i feel great now!

thanks for the reply spongebabe....i was thinking i would never feel normal again....they will be doing the surgery on oct 6 removing colon and rectum no chance for reversal...but when i think of how i am feeling now i am ready to get my life back

Laymanz,

Before surgery, I had active Crohn's and would get anemic and have blood transfusions, too. At its worst, my hemoglobin went down to a 6, and I was extremely exhausted, so I really feel for you. sad

Ever since my colon and rectum removal two years ago, I have been disease-free and my blood levels have been excellent, so this surgery will really help you, too.

Hang in there, October 6th is right around the corner!

I was slightly anemic right after my surgery while still in the hospital but I guess not low enough to give me a transfusion. Had surgery in Oct '07 (wow..almost a year now). By January I was back to working out. Was feeling great, expect for some small intestines spasms.

But then I started getting shortness of breathe and at one point I passed out in the bathroom. The blood test showed I'd become very anemic. My count had gotten down to 6 like your's. Was put back in the hospital and given blood transfusion.

Sent back to GI doctor and after several tests he discovered I had developed bleeding ulcers as a reaction to the staples where they had reconnected me.

I have to watch my iron intake and get my blood tested every few months to make sure I'm not getting low.

I still feel better now than I did before the surgery. You have some hard months ahead, but it will be worth it. You'll feel much better once you're recovered from the surgery.
